First, let me say that Tabac is not a regular in my rotation...i love the scent but it typically only gets used 3, maybe 4, times a year.  Because of that, I decided to roll the dice and ordered from Amazon.  I figured if they sent the tallow (which, as rudyvey pointed out earlier, is what they advertise) then, great, I've got a backup.  If they sent the non-tallow, well, it's not as if I don't enjoy trying new soaps.  My package arrived the other day and, guess i'm trying the new non-tallow version Smile

Overall, it really isn't that bad.  The scent is still Tabac, although I feel the scent strength has been taken down just a notch.  But only a notch.  I loaded with a damp 26mm synthetic for 30 seconds off the dry puck and face-lathered for five minutes.  I usually lather for around 10 minutes but was in a hurry.  The resulting lather provided more than enough cushion and slickness.  It will be interesting to see how the lather looks when I go with a more normal routine.  But for now, I really don't have any complaints with the non-tallow version:

What’s so ironic is that a long time ago Tabac was one of the only soaps still using tallow, prior to the resurgence in the last ten years.

Maybe the new soap is fine, but they really ought to remove “Original” from the cake…

Original refers to the scent. I have a can of the deodorant. Says Original.

Just like XPEC had Original on both versions. "Original" is the name of the scent. Has nothing to do with the soap/cream ingredients.

Need a blind test with someone that isn't familiar with Tabac.

There is a significant difference in scent and performance between the two formulations. I am not sure of the rules for posting to another forum here. Is that allowed?

In a blind test of two samples by a reviewer unfamiliar with Tabac, the original tallow formulation was found to have "a nice, rich, smooth lather that was slick and protective, provided for a great shave, and had a pretty darn good post-shave face feel. [The tallow formula] is a considerably better shave soap than [the new formulation] for me and my face; it is not close, and there would be no way I would confuse one of these lathers for the other."

Regarding the new formulation, "This is a competent but lackluster shaving soap that stinks (but smells better than [the tallow formulation]), is slick but not protective, tends to lather up more billowy than I like regardless of how I lather it, and has a neutral post-shave face feel."

So we don't have the same confusion as happened with XPEC, I suggest we leave the word "original" out of Tabac conversations.

It's gone totally off the rails with Chicken Little panic buying, people vacuum sealing old stock, etc., etc. Worse than bunch of old hens I tell ya. In 9 out of ten old threads in the past all people could do was bitch about the scent!! Now all of a sudden it's manna!!! Good grief!!  Rolleyes

Arko is still around and shaves just as well and has its own unique scent to boot!! Same for the Palmolive stick.

It's only shaving and not NASA research we're doing. Some of you guys could feed a small village for a year on what you spend on wet shaving.
