Before going for our afternoon walk today, we went to a local sushi bar for lunch. My wife previously lived a somewhat 'sheltered' life in the Midwest, with very little food exploration; and until we met and married 15 years ago, there were many foods she had never tried, including sushi. Today was her first time having it, so it was fun to see her experience the fish, sticky rice, wasabi, and pickled ginger. And she liked it! We'll definitely go back in the future. We were amazed that we were the only customers there for the whole time, despite the restaurant getting rave reviews on Yelp.

That looks delicious, John. I had an excellent sushi restaurant in my neighborhood but it closed (possibly because of Covid-19, though I'm not sure). Another is supposed to open in its place and I hope it's as good.

Good for you for getting her to try it, and to her for being open to it! I'm glad for both of you that she enjoyed it... My wife can't stand fish (which is a shame because her dad fishes and brings home fresh stuff all the time), so it's a rare occasion when we get to go out to sushi together. It's usually for my birthday or something like that, and she's ordering a chicken teriyaki and a shrimp tempura roll  Tongue

I doubt that they'd deliver to central Maine! :-)

There might be a restaurant in WTVL that would have sushi. In the mall across from CVS if memory serves.

The rice definitely puts it outside my food choices.

Hey Brian! I head they closed, but I haven't verified it. But pre-covid we got sushi or something without the rice, about almost every week.

Hope you are doing well!

Love fish! Brian, what you want is sashimi which is “sushi “ without the rice. This is from a great place in Vancouver.

Not sure why that picture inserted above but you get the idea.

Or didn’t post at all!

Yes, sashimi is what we order, along with a small sushi roll or two! My Dad, being hunter/fisher/trapper, thinks I am insane for eating raw fish. He loves to kid me about it when I mention it, bringing up my sometimes questionable eating habits while growing up. Rather, my indifference/distaste for certain staple meals! I later learned it was the prep, and I didn't like to eat game the way he did! But done differently, I tuck right in!

I'd try sashimi.

Eric, about prep... I really dislike cooked salmonids, any of the species that I've had so far. I can eat it and some are better than others. But I absolutely love gravlox, aka "lox", either smoked or unsmoked. For those who don't know, gravlox is raw but cured salmon. But I'd go broke eating it and loving it as much as I do if I bought it in the tiny packages, so I make my own. It's easy to make and that allows me to really pile it on. In years past that meant on a toasted bagel with cream cheese. Today it would mean on a slice of toasted keto bread. It's even good in an omelet, put on the eggs when they're done, then flipped to encase the slices and just warm them (no cooking of the lox). Cream cheese can be added if desired. Eating that breakfast you'll think you died and went to heaven, and it's definitely keto.
