"Black Rose" landed yesterday. As you may know by now, Los Jabones de Joserra is my favorite Artisan soap maker. The Gentleman is from Spain and his products can be purchased state-side from Pasteur's or The Razor Company. Lather quality is right up there with Tabac tallow (my favorite old school soap). Scents are all unique and complex... Black Rose is certainly no different and the name is quite fitting. Rose is clearly up front, but the oud and sandalwood are also easily detected.

The Wunderbar and vintage Astra blade delivered in spades (man, I need to find a big stash of these blades). Finished things with Thayers Rose Witch Hazel.

I had stopped buying Los Jabones de Joserra (LJdJ), but only because the price rubbed me the wrong way.  Then, after noticing myself reaching for it repeatedly, I did a 180° and bought some again.  It's like this for me:  (1) The performance is always in that hair-splitting, rarified air where you would need a photo-finish to sort out the winner; (2) I could almost whip up the lather in my sleep; and - most importantly for me personally - (3) the scent approaches the "divine" more often than with the other pack leaders.  Jose's scents (Jose Martinez) do not always ring the heavenly bell for me, but they are good enough often enough to keep me coming back.  FWIW Black Rose and Rodrigo De Jerez are two of my favs (and a tub of Passion Incense is in the pipeline).  There is one other factor that matters to me and stokes my enthusiasm for LJdJ:  Jose's soaps typically remain on stockists' shelves for quite a while - more than long enough to review early adopter feedback.  That's quite different from artisans whose products tend to come and go quickly, and with no guarantee as to whether or when they might ever return.

Pretty awesome 5 AM shave this morning. I was 1/2 asleep and didn't even cut myself

I must say, I'm enamored with the Lupo 72. If I was forced to pick only 1 razor from my overflowing den of nifty, shiny razors, it would probably be the Lupo 72. Yep, it works better (for me) than either of my Wolfman's... and just happens to be 5X cheaper. The Yates, Henson, and Rex Envoy are all excellent razors too and a blast to use, but the humble little Lupo is the pack leader in my den. The 95 plate is also a good time, but there is something special about the 72 plate on my face.

Let's chat about soap. Los Jabones de Joserra "Rodrigo De Jerez" landed this week and today was the maiden voyage. "Rodrigo De Jerez" is a straight-up tobacco scent. As you may know, it's actually kinda hard to find a straight-up, well executed tobacco scent in the wetshaving world. Most are mixed with overly sweet notes, or boozy notes, or random leather notes. Many of us (including myself) simply want a tobacco scented soap that smells only like humidor or un-cut cigar. Well, I'm happy to report "Rodrigo De Jerez" accomplishes that! Of course the performance and post-shave are killer too. So if you want a great tobacco scented soap, look no further than this guy.

Oh, my 4 McDuff splashes arrived too. What a week! "Alone in the Woods" is a woodsy scent. Go figure. Lots of cedar (which I like). Somehow it pairs well with "Rodrigo De Jerez". Kinda like I was enjoying a cigar out in woods. This is a non-alcohol splash. It has a great, moisturizing feel and doesn't really dry down much. You better love the tacky feel if you dabble in this one. Scent strength is fairly light. I dig this stuff a lot so far. (and psst... its onsale for $12 at The Shave Supply TheShaveSupply right now). Great shop, incredibly fast shipping, and Gareth is a super nice dude.

And lastly, the vintage Astra just keeps going. I would likely pay a stupid amount of $ for a stash of these blades (if I could find them).

Good point, Mike. Price tag does not mean better than everything under that price! (But I still love my Sabre, even as I find a $10 ebay GEM is as good!)
