I have been wetshaving for around 1 year now and want to buy a "nicer" brush. I got a few boar brushes an i like them a lot but now i want some thing softer but stile some backbone. Have been looking at Simpsons Commodore X3 and Semogue Owners Club 2 Band Badger but cant decide. I face lather 99% of the time and ben looking for something around 70£.

Hello stimpy and welcome to DFS. I have only owned two higher end badgers and one was a Simpson Colonel best badger and the other which I use every other day is a Thater 4125/2 Bulb 3 band. I am a fan of soft brushes and own several synthetics, so I went with Thater and it did not let me down. There is no comparison between the Colonel and Thater to me, however I have not owned a Simpson Super or Manchurian. I'm thinking Super would be much softer. But if softness is what you desire then Thater and Shavemac are known for soft brushes, and I honestly don't know how a brush could get any softer than my Thater, perhaps a tie buy softer I don't think so. Backbone is sufficient for me on my 3 band, but most go for the 2 band if they want more backbone. Also, I am a face latherer.

I have a Shavemac three-band and a Thäter three-band, both bulb shape, and they're both very nice. I had a Thäter two-band for a while but found it too scrubby for my liking (oddly enough). Honestly, between the two I like the Shavemac more: it's soft and feels great, but has never given me any trouble lathering. I don't think you can go wrong with these two brands.

If you want a soft brush with some backbone and don't want to spend a lot of money, you can't go wrong with some of the new Plisson-style synthetics. Many companies offer them such as RazoRock, Stirling or Maggard Razors to name a few. They are great brushes!

If you're set on badger, at that price point, the SOC might be one of your only options. I just received one about a week or so ago and have been using it since. I like it, it's a very nice brush and it's my first badger so I don't have anything to compare it to. It's soft but not as soft as the Plissoft synthetic and it has a little scrub to it. I'm sure it will get softer with use though. Also, I do love the cherry wood handle. My more inexpensive brushes make just as good of a lather though.

If you want soft with backbone get a Simpson synthetic. I have no idea what they cost today. But they have extremely soft tips and possibly even more backbone than a boar. Their Chubby2 is simply superb with a loft of 54mm, but you must request it. Or one did need to request it. Maybe they come with the higher loft today. Their Classic1 is also good but the "wall of fiber" that is the CH2 will absolutely blow your mind. If you don't agree you can send it to me for proper disposal.

Much great advice here. Like Brian, I am also a fan of the CH2 synthetic. I would also recommend the Whipped Dog 30mm as an alternative synthetic- love that brush.

As to badger, Zenith would fit into your price range. I don't own one myself but they get rave reviews under house brand as well as others such as Italian Barber (they rebrand the brush).

Good luck!

I love my 50mm lofted CH2S, I also would like to try the 54mm as I would imagine it would be better.

Currently the Simpsons website says they are sold out of CH2S.

Straight Razor Designs has some instock for $90 with the loft listed at 52mm.
