Sometimes a little money goes a long way. And a cheap soap, with a simple formulation like Cella, does a great job. Slick and protective, easy to lather, with a subtle almond scent that may not be of everybody's liking, but it is of my liking
. Being a tallow based soap, it softens my whiskers a tad more than the vegetal based soaps, which is always helpful. I loaded the brush thoroughly, as if I hated the soap, and got quickly a dense, abundant lather, enough for three passes and confort, out of brush whose performance is turning out to be a pleasant surprise. I had reknotted it with a VigShaving Finest 3 Band knot that has been both cheap and good, lathering quickly, with some scrub and good backbone. Can't wait for the handles that I have on the way from Whipped Dog to have my Finest 2 Band knot glued down and give it its first go, because just for the looks of it, it looked like it could perform even better.
Today I got the angle and the technique of the Slant right, and was rewarded by a memorable shave. Three passes, with a very slight ATG pass, incident free, and with a feeling that this razor makes things easy where others find quite a bit of trouble. You do feel the blade on your face but it's a reassuring sensation. As long as you keep your pressure to 0, no problem, and your blade will cut cleanly through your whiskers with ease and efficiency.
After the shave and confort lather, a splash of a Tüff lotion that has been beefed up with some menthol and extra Witch Hazel and has improved quite a bit. Then a tad of Bulldog and, oh boy, I was a happy man.
