It’s grocery shopping day so I got up and had an early morning shave.

VDH TTO Razor
Gillette 7 O’clock Yellow blade
Omega Pure Bristle Badger Effect Brush
Derby Lemon Shave Cream
Hai Karate AS

I like the VDH razor. Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of VDH products on clearance in many chain stores. I saw their razor on clearance for $6.99 so I got it. The looks remind me of a razor I bought about 8 years ago; a Weishi (China). It was a pretty good economy razor but after a while the plating came loose on the stem. The main reason I stopped using it was that it was too mild for me. The VDH also closely resembles a Timor razor I saw online, but know nothing about. Anyway according to the package the VDH parts are made in China and are assembled in the US. So I bought it, tried it, and liked it. It is much more aggressive than the Weishi or Feather Popular. I put it on the level of a pre war triangle Tech. It looks well built; I guess time will tell.
As I believe I’ve said before the Gillette Sharp Edge blades seem to work well in some razors and not so good in others. They work fine in the VDH. It was a very smooth ride. I just don’t like blades with that glue on them. I’m still spoiled from when blades came in dispensers not paper.
The Badger Effect brush is one of the softest I’ve used, and still has great backbone. It’s a pleasure to use but unfortunately it sheds quite a bit. Time to retire it.
I wanted something citrusy to go with the AS, all I had was the Derby, It’s not a bad economy cream but for me it lacks in the protection department.
An acquaintance of mine found an old bottle of Hai Karate in his closet and knowing my interest in traditional shaving gave it to me. It was unopened. The scent is still very distinct; it just seems to have lost some of its intensity. For those of you who remember this AS you know that scent was what this stuff was all about. If I remember correctly the marketing gimmick for this AS was that if you used it you would have to beat the ladies off with Karate. (Before anyone starts sending me hate mail please remember this was many moons ago and many ad campaigns were like that.)  Anyway, I kind of like it for a non serious summer AS. And no, I don’t think I will need to beat off any females at the Piggly Wiggly this morning.

Star DE, Permasharp with two shims. Great, close shave. A little buffing required on the back of my head but no complaints. Definitely a Tech beater and then some.[Image: 92e66e0c7854d262a35917aa721b378c.jpg]
