Today is Wolfgang Mozart's birthday. Ever since I first played Mozart works in orchestras as a kid, I've been struck by how "inevitable" the music is: when you listen to one of his passages, each note is exactly right in relation to the ones before and after it, as if it
had to be just as it is. Mozart was renowned as one of the fastest music writers, making very few revisions, giving the impression that he was acting as a conduit to channel divinity rather than just creating the music. As Salieri said in the film
Amadeus, "It seemed to me that I was hearing the very voice of God."
So today I have been listening to his oboe concerto in C, a joy to play and here performed by one of the best oboists ever, Heinz Holliger.
