Love, Laughter & Shaving
Love, Laughter & Shaving
Well, I had to try it, I did, and I can't say I've succeeded. Floïd is the most well known of all after shaves splashes that have been manufactured in this country. It has deserved a reputation for being quite effective and leaving a smooth and refreshed skin, but also for having a barbershop-like scent quite suitable for gentlemen the age of my Granddad (and I'm in my 40s) but doubtfully suitable for the present day. To each his own, of course, and the debates in the Spanish forums amongst those who like and dislike it are full of hilarious comparisons and metaphors, making for an always entertaining read.
So I've come across this lotion a lot of times. It's readily available in most stores over here and there was no problem in taking a whiff at it. I never quite fully liked it. Not that I loathed it (as some do), but it was just not my cup of tea. There is, however, something romantic about this splash. The tradition behind it, the bottle, it's "vintage" spirit. All that makes it attractive and I'm all for traditions, so the other day I eventually succumbed, and brought this "mentolado suave" bottle home. I went for the "suave" (mild) version because I can always add some menthol crystal to beef up the cooling effect, but some guys state that the scent is also milder than in the "mentolado vigoroso" version. So after having a perfect three pass shave, lathering this beautiful floral scent of the "Dama de Noche", I was ready for Floïd. Truth to be told, performance wise, it's excellent. The alcohol content is moderate so it does not sting too much, and it leaves your skin soft and well hydrated. The scent is just a different tale. It's amazing how persistent it is. You may like or dislike it, but I haven't used any other splash that lasts this long. After nearly an hour I could still smell it and was getting tired of it , even though I had applied some Eufros balm when the splash was absorved, so I reached for the Speick bottle in an attempt to dilute the Floïd scent. It helped.
The Floïd bottle is now stored in the back of my bathroom cabinet. It will stay there until next winter because it probably will pair well with Tabac, but it is, IMHO, just not suitable for spring or summertime. I'll give it another chance, that's for sure, but even if it fails again... well, it just doesn't hurt to keep it down there. It's a nice bottle and Grandpa used to have one like this one on his bathroom shelf.
