SOTD JULY 14, 2020

Welcome to Tabac Tuesday. Today was the inaugural shave with the new-to-me Genco 35. The fellow who swapped with me claimed he had honed this vintage razor after restoring it with a series of progressive hones all the way to 12,000 grit. Well it was certainly sharp enough. The two pass (WTG, ATG) mug shave went well with one slight weeper during the second pass just below the Adam’s Apple which disappeared upon WH application. I’ve learned that a thinner, slippery lather seems to work best for me with a straight razor, and that was certainly the case this morning. The result was another DFS++.

I spent more time building my dome lather into the thick, yogurty consistency preferred with my safety razors. The razor for my dome shave was my 2011 R41 which I have sitting on my spare Occam’s DE handle. This razor was initially intimidating given its reputation for efficiency, until I began using it regularly. In actuality, my Barbasol FH is probably a tad bit more efficient. In any case, the R41 made short work of my dome stubble, mowing everything right down to the skin line, in the process leaving a few remaining rough areas in the usual valleys on the back of the noggin. Some selective buffing eradicated that problem and left me cool, refreshed, clean and oh so velveteen (VBBS).

RAZOR: Genco 35 (Mug), Muhle R41 (2011)
BLADE: Suneko (2)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Rabid Banana Preshave Cube
BRUSH: Alpha Shaving T-400 w/ 26mm Boar Knot
SOAP: Tabac w/ 6 drops of M-Bomb
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Osage Rub and Cremo Cooling Post Shave Balm.

Stubble: 24hrs.
Pre: Hot Water Splash
Soap: Shannon’s Soaps Haymarket
Brush: Rudy Vey CH3 w/30mm Shavemac Finest in a Jade resin handle
Bowl: CC Heavy Copper
Razor: Razorock Mamba 70 w/Ti handle
Blade: Personna Med Prep (1)
Result: 9.75

The soap was a sample someone threw in with something I bought second-hand.  Very nice surprise.  Lots of slickness and cushion and a really thick luxurious lather easily achieved.  A little bit was all it took to load up the CH3 easily.  Nice scent; my nose is nothing to speak of, but I got cedar and smoke, just like sitting in front of a cedar campfire.  The RV CH3/Shavemac is a dream.  Nice full bulb, and easier to manage than my Simpson CH3.  The Simpson has a taller, and softer, fan/bulb knot that is more of a pillow of fluffy fur.  The RV-Shavemac, however, is a right-down-to-business bulldozer of badger.  Each is wonderful in its own way, but the RV is not to be denied.  I also really like the Jade handle.  When this brush popped up on the BST, I was able to buy it for less than 30% of what a new Simpson CH3 would cost.  (Thanks again Corey!)  The RR Mamba 70 is a sure performer.  This mild razor lets you relax gives you a BBS shave if you take your time.  The BBS may not last as long as a more aggressive razor, but I can use the Mamba every single day without irritation.  The blade was good.  This was my first go-around with a Personna Med Prep.  Some report they don’t like it, finding it tuggy and rough for the first several shaves.  But I liked it with the Mamba.  We’ll see how the Med Preps do over time.  Happy shaves to all!
