SOTD WEDNESDAY MORNING, APRIL 14, 2021

Mitten continues to improve after the coyote attack early Monday morning. It looks like he’ll return home tomorrow, which is a relief. My bride has been rising very early for her (5:30AM) in order to travel to see her “kitten”. Believe me, he’s anything but that. But he’s a good cat, and I’m really glad it looks like he’ll recover, albeit with some scars. Anyway, back to business! The shave this morning featured two proven performers from the den, the H. Hobson 6/8 Wedge and the Gem Model 1912 safety razor.

The edge on the Hobson, sourced from Len Curcurrato [sp. ?, ‘Bouschie’] is deceptively sharp, yet also buttery smooth. Bouschie (Len) at Sharp Razor Palace is a very capable honemeister. By the way, he’s also a true gentleman and a great source of very fairly priced, restored vintage straight razors on the SRP BST. His work may not be as well known as others, but his razors deliver the goods. I’ve sent many newbies looking for a reliable, well-honed razor his way and the feedback is uniformly enthusiastic and positive.

The mug shave was a three pass delight thanks to a great lather machine, the Aluminum handled MrEE Tuxedo Synth Monster. This was the brush that changed my mind about synthetics. Two of my three LE MrEE brushes possess synthetic knots. The first arrived with a hybrid knot which is also a great performer. The flow through on the “Monster”, an homage to the Simpson Chubby 3, is just superb. My well water has always paired well with MWF, my favorite shave soap. And this morning’s lather was just the ticket!

The noggin shave with the Gem Model 1912 certainly didn’t disappoint either. I’ve always liked the Art Deco handle on this safety razor. I’ve noticed that I’m spending extra time painting on the MWF lather. This big honkin’ knot really feels good on the shave surfaces. Anyway, after the great mug shave, I loaded a fresh Pella PTSD Gem blade, and had at it. Two ATG passes followed by a third unnecessary WTG pass left your very satisfied narrator feeling refreshed, clean and porcelain smooth! The finish with my favorite Pre de Provence Bergamot & Thyme AS Balm was the icing on the cake.

RAZOR: H. Hobson Sheffield Wedge 6/8 (Mug), Gem Model 1912 (Dome)
BLADE: Pella PTFE Gem
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Aluminum Monster Tuxedo Synth
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Pre de Provence Bergamot & Thyme AS Balm.

SOTD MONDAY MORNING, APRIL 12, 2021

Up early again, this time with a feline emergency. One of my wife’s three cats was attacked by a coyote and needed to be rushed to the local Veterinary Emergency service by yours truly. He’s in pretty bad shape. The coyote was sent to join his ancestors, and yours truly has a township gun ordinance violation to deal with thanks to my coyote-loving new neighbor! Mitten’s a good cat, but it doesn’t look good! After returning home, I needed a pick-me-up. So I grabbed my 160 year old Boker French Point and my Christopher Bradley safety razor from Karve.

This old Boker just feels so good in hand, and despite the softer English cast steel needing more frequent touch ups than some of my other straights, the edge always feels buttery smooth on my mug. The regular three pass mug shave checked all the boxes as did the two pass ATG dome shave with the Karve. I’d stopped using the Karve because of my tendency to nip my ear with the exposed tabs, but since getting the wide body top cap it’s no longer a concern. I feel a bit pissed off, but otherwise clean, refreshed and dolphin smooth!

RAZOR: H. Boker & Co. French Point (Mug), Karve Safety Razor with D_OC Plate (Dome)
BLADE: Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Alpha Shaving T-400 Tribute with 26mm Tuxedo Synth Ferrule
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with PAA Frost Byte AS/Cologne.

Yikes, sorry to hear about Mittens. Hope he pulls through.

Also damn rotten of the new neighbor. What a jerk. I hope karma pays him back.

Great sounding shave, though. Hopefully things turn around for the rest of your day. Good luck!
Thanks, Doug, sorry for not responding earlier.  Mitten’s doing much better.  My neighbor just moved in with her ‘partner’ back in Feb. 2020.  She’s a millennial 30 something and apparently some hotshot professor at Univ. of Penn.  It turns out she’s been feeding these vermin since she arrived.  We’ve lost a number of small pets in the neighborhood since her arrival.  After I shot her beloved coyote in MY yard to protect poor Mitten who was scrapping way out of his weight class, she called the police who ticketed me for violating the township gun ordinance.  The coyote was a nursing female, so we tracked her back to her 5 pup litter which my neighbor’s blue tick hound made short of.  Turns out old Sam (hound) doesn’t like coyotes any more than we did!
