Wow, great to have someone here with your experience. I am curious, if I may ask-have you ever honed a Gold Dollar? If so what model, etc.?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

My Gold dollar. I replaced the scales and reshaped it. If i remember right i was able to hone it up to 8k. Any finer than that and the edge falls apart. Its been 4 to 5 years since i shaved with it but i think i could get 5 or 6 shaves from it before the edge needed touched up. I like a 20k edge. IMO, they just are not made well. Very inconsistent in steal and grinds. Always too thick of a spine so your bevel angle is extremely high and the stabilizer always needs fixed.

You asked so this is my opinion. If you want something to play with it's fine but personally id use vintage american steal if someone want to learn to hone. Not these.

Now dont flame me fir my opinion. Lol. [Image: 6cGvVRg.jpg]

@sortanewguy.  Thanks for your response.  No flame war here.  I agree, the older GD's have a thick spine and as a result, an obtuse bevel. The newest ones are definaitely thinner. Mine shave fine but I have never honed one beyond 10-12K.
