Sorta New Guy

I just looked myself up and it seems I'm never did an introduction. I joined march of 2022 but haven't posted but 5 recent posts. Odd. I normally jump right in. Makes me wonder if I got deleted or something.

A little about me. I've been wet shaving since the late 70s. Uncle Sam had me using the blue plastic razors for a while but after boot camp I was able to use a DE again. Around 2000 (just guessing here) I started using Straight Razors. I became a Mentor on another forum helping out the new guys. Then I became in-charge of any giveaways on the forum. Had a lot of fun doing that. Now I don't get a lot of time and I've spread myself out to different forums. I don't do social media stuff. I'm an old dog who knows enough about computers to get myself in trouble.

I drive truck for a living and haul fuel. Yep, I drive a bomb all day. This is why I have the name Gasman. So when you see the fuel truck driving down the highway give him a little room. I'm stressed enough.

my razor collection has grown a bit over the years. I got into restoring Straight Razors and found I could make some rough looking blades like new again. Learned how to hone razors. That took a few years to figure out. Its not as easy at you would think, but I don't want to get into that. My hone collection grew and now I'm sure I have 40 rocks. If not a few more. My Razor Collection grew to include SE razors and DE razors and Injectors. Picked up a few Kamasori's and replaceable blade razors (Shavettes). After some more time I collected vintage brushes. After buying a wood lathe I learned to turn a few shave bowls and make brush handles, and a lot of other non shaving items.

Ray twisted my arm and made me buy all kinds of soaps so I could test them a few years back. I learned a lot about the artisan soaps and even the triple milled vegan soaps too. I picked up a couple dozen shave bowl and scuttles. Made my DE blade selection up to a count that I'd never use them all in my life time.

Now here I am. Still finding a razor that peaks my interest now and then and at a low price I will buy it. My razor collection is shy of 400 but why not buy another. LOL. My brush collection is pushing 180, DE's around 80. SE in the high 30s. Injectors around 40.

I have a nice collection of vintage Gillettes and find the British ones to be my favorites in those.

So there you go. I just figured out how to post pictures so I will just post one. A picture of my razor cabinet. Its over flowing into boxes and plastic containers in the closet. But hey, One more razor cant hurt. LOL.

OH, I have a few strops too. Ha.

Welcome to DFS, Sir. It is great to meet dedicated hobbyist like you. I am sure you have a great collection since you are a senior/master at wet shaving. Hope to see often your Shave of The Day pictures with your beautiful razor/safety razor/brush collections.

Sounds like quite a collection. 
It reminds me of a line from an '80s movie ("The Blue Iguana") when the bartender leans over and says "I have so many friends that I never have to see the same ones twice".

What's the story on the cabinet? It looks vintage. Library card drawers?

I don't do SOTD Pics very often as its the last thing i do before bedtime. And that's around 7pm. Being a truck driver my time is very precious. Working 75 to 80 hours a week doesn't leave much time as you can imagine. I do get two days off a week. One is for repairing what SWMBO broke during the week. The other is only half mine. Lol

My cabinet is an Apothecary Cabinet from Japan. My best guess is mid 1800s. Its put together with tiny slivers of wood. No nails. Copper plates on the drawer fronts have Japanese writing on them. Guessing it says what might have been in it.

Here is a picture of when it was neat and tidy after I reworked the drawers.

Probably spare wooden dowels/nails in the package.

Welcome and thanks for sharing some of your collection. I tried feeding some of the images into Apple and Google OCR translate but not much made sense or was detected. On one drawer that it could pick up characters it seemed to consistently include the word "drink" and another drawer translated partially as "cube gun" I'm guessing that was a complete miss on translation
