So far for me the only things I've had a reaction to are TOBS Avocado cream and Maggard's Fougere Savage, which is unfortunate because I loved the scent and performance of FS

Tiki Land Locked Vegan. Which is funny because it is the only soap in 75+ to give me problems. It must be that specific essential oil.

Of the soaps I've tried so far, I've gotten a reaction from:

  • Maggard's London Barbershop
  • Mickey Lee's Kraken
  • TOBS Coconut
Not really sure what I'm allergic to in them, but man did it burn.

I've been very lucky. Fougeres give me a little burn. Have tried several; MDC, B&M, PAA, they all gave a slight burn except for SV Felce Aromatica which doesnt smell like a traditional fougere to me (or like the others i've listed). Only major burn to where I couldn't use it came yesterday with a puck of Bay Rum from Eva Nestorova. This stuff smells great, but its such an intense scent I kind of knew it was going to be to hot on the face. When I lathered it up and applied, sure enough it burned. So I know have a great bar of hand soap that I love the smell of. Picked up 5 other of her soaps so ill be trying them out but I dont think any of the others will be hot.

I didn't really notice that most soaps were tingling my face until I started using unscented soaps. Now it is very noticeable to me when I switch back to scented soaps to try. There are a few scented soaps I can get away with only a slight tingle by the third pass, but many burn to the point of being uncomfortable within a minute of starting to lather.

I've recently kind of settled on just using unscented soaps, namely Stirling's Naked & Smooth (also currently testing their unscented beeswax formula which is also fantastic). Oddly enough I don't find that I miss the scented soaps as much as I thought, and there's actually something quite calm and comforting about using an unscented soap (probably the fact that my face doesn't burn haha).

I think what you have been experiencing has become more common in the last 4 years with the explosion of artisan soap makers. There are a lot of soaps out there that greatly vary with the ingredient quality. Example: if you were to ask 5 different artisan soap makers to manufacture one soap with the same ingredients and the same mix of ingredients you will most likely find that each soap will be different because they will source their ingredients from different suppliers which will impact on the end product. Some artisans will use cheap suppliers from china some will use locally produced ingredients and there are a small batch of artisans whom will only source the finest of ingredients no matter what the cost. In the end it all comes down to quality you simply can't get around that. Lastly there is also a small percentage of shavers that are simply allergic to some ingredients and some shavers just simply have very sensitive skin.

Hmm, I didn't know Stirling produces and unscented version. Good to know.

Lots of artisan soaps that seem like they use low quality fragrance ingredients tend to burn my face, since I have very sensitive skin. For me the skin burning seems to be related to an allergy to cheap fragrance ingredients - there seems to be a correlation between my allergenic reactions and how cheap a fragrance smells (I have the same issue with perfumes). This is one reason why I try very hard to get samples before purchasing the full sized products.

I'd bet that for most people the "burning" issue is related to the use of low quality fragrance oils, or simple allergies to specific ingredients.

WHen I first started wet shaving I tried a sample of Mama Bears ocean rain and that burned the hell out of my face.
The only other one that burned my face was Catie's Bubbles Pommes Au Four ended up trading it with Celtic knot. I have some that tingle my face but not burn.
