Show us your Beard and/or Mustache.

I double checked the calendar.

I was closer to 10 weeks in.

Oh well. I might have buzzed back a month of it.

You guys, gwsmallwood and Chris, and Cliff, Freddy too... You guys got the genes. I'm just trying to anchor my pudgy face. Dang. If I can get just some of the fill and symmetry you dudes have I'll be happy.

I'm not giving up though. I've gone this far. No electric trimmer until 2018 at least!

My latest issue is where to cut? At the ends. Corner of my mouth. At the smile line? At the actual corner? My mustache seems to grow right over to my ear so where does it no longer look right? Is it part of the beard at a certain point? I'm going for the Chevron or Walrus.

In my case, Todd, it's the moustache wax, not the genes.

It has fallen into a pattern that, once waxed, I will trim the couple of hairs that may be too short to be held up by the wax. When the wax is washed out at the end of the day, my moustache is as unrly as you describe yours. As for a beard, I have never managed that. My beard hair just doesn't come in full enough for that.

My beard still isn't the best in the world. I have some pretty sparse patches beside the goatee area, and even where it has filled in, it's still not very dense. I have discovered that I can grow a pretty epic mustache, though. I'm probably going to get the beard trimmed again in a week or two. Still haven't decided yet. I do plan to let the mustache keep going for at least another month or two, though I might trim the tips a bit to get all of the hairs closer to the same length. I'll post some updated pics soon. I found I prefer a more natural look to the mustache with just a light coating of light to medium hold wax (I've been using up the last of some Penhaligon's). I did go with some WSP Hercules for Jr. High service where I was volunteering a couple of weeks ago. The kids thought it was fun.

Yeah, standard Flak Jackets. I think this is my third pair. My first pair I only wore for a year, then replaced them for the blacks. Second pair lasted over 2 years. This is number 3 and I've had this pair for almost 2 years. They're comfortable, so I just get transitions and that's all I wear.

It's not about genetics as much as time. I went almost 2 full years before I trimmed my beard at all. It was 14 months before I trimmed the stache and 20 months when I trimmed the beard significantly.

For the beard I plan on just letting it grow. It's been 2 years now, and I see reason to cut it back now.

For the stache, I trim every 2 weeks or so at this point. I just take a pair of small, sharp, barber shears, comb it straight down over my lip, and trim the tips back to line up with the bottom of my upper lip. Just enough to keep the tips out of my mouth.

Trimming the stache like this, but leaving the curly ends long, I don't have to use any wax or glue to keep it reasonable...


I've never managed the amount of control over my stache that these other gentlemen have, but that picture is all natural, just washed, oiled, and brushed...

Chris, my 'stache would be completely out of control at the length I have it if it wasn't heavily waxed.  The wax you gave to me, and others like it, just weren't strong enough so the Pinaud Clubman Moustache Wax, which is much more like a cream, is about the only thing I have found that works.  Once it sets, I'm good for the day.  Sometimes it would be nice to have a more natural look but, for me, the only way to accomplish that would be to go back to the traditional moustache I wore before letting it grow out.

It takes a while to decide what you want to do with your facial hair. For the longest time; I had a semi-full beard, meaning bare cheeks and bare neck. Then, when it turned mostly white, I decided to ditch the Santa look and go with a goatee.
