Hey Bad Dad About those Gold Dollar blades,

I am new to straights and sharpening them but I can put an edge on almost anything.

With the exception of plane blades, the razor is about the easiest object out there to sharpen.

You don't need to worry about angle as it is built in so if a gold dollar is not warped, it should sharpen lot better than my Craftsman wood chisels, and with a good lather Bad Dad,

you could probably shave with one of those.

I suggest all you with a gold dollar get yourself another razor and send the GD's to me. I will put a great edge on them. I won't send them back but they will be sharp.......

To clarify my position:

I like Gold Dollar razors. I had one, I used it well, and I passed it along to a newer straight shaver when I started collecting vintage straights. I like Gold Dollars, Gold Monkeys, ZY, and any other blade that will take and hold a good edge, and give a new shaver a solid introduction to straight razor shaving. If that razor can be had with a truly shave ready edge for less than $50, I am a fan.

I agree with your assessment regarding sharpening edges. I've been sharpening knives by hand since I was an 8 year old with a slip-joint and a 4" Carborundum in my front pockets. I've never used a "sharpening system" in my life, and I've worked hard to produce edges that are better than average, though I admit that my best edges pale in comparison to the quality of edge work done by a good many knife and razor honers out there.

I've never knocked anyone for their choice in blade or stone, here or any other public forum or social media outlet. I'm a firm believer in that we all should do what works best for us. There is a million and one ways to remove steel with a piece of abrasive, from the very inexpensive lapping films to the $1000 Jnats, and each choice in gear will itself reveal a million and one other possibilities for producing an edge.

My stone choices work best for me. Your choices will work best for you, if you put in the effort. While you seem to have misinterpreted my position on the use of Gold Dollar et. al. razors, I encourage you to hold on to those ideals. Don;t ever let anyone tell you that something you are having success with is "wrong". If it works and provides the results you are after, tell them to pound sand and keep doing what you're doing. If it ain't broke...don;t fix it...

If you ever interpreted any other position from me in this forum, than accept my apology, and go forward knowing that it was not, and will not ever be, intentional on my part. It simply is not how I enjoy this hobby. To each his own.

No misunderstanding at all. I am just saying if others out there are not satisfied with that blade they can send it to this old man on a fixed income and it will have a good home and it will be very sharp.

It was a poor attempt at humour on my part. I know your a pro at sharp, not one scar on that clean shaven dome of yours....

Been gone for a while, have one more month of hectic left. A flea market find from the past weekend. Needed some polish and love and cleaned up nicely. It is made by Friedr Dennert - Solingen Foche. The scales are a yellow swirl, like cracked ice only lemon flavored. 6/8, round point, top jimps and thumb notch. Has a happy footballer emblem as a finishing touch.
