Interesting points Steve56 , how do you determine what products can and can't be criticized? I think any and all products can be criticized, however, the key is whether the criticism is constructive or just trolling. In my experience there isn't a single product out there that has zero redeeming qualities nor are there any that are perfect so I make my choices based on my own subjective criteria.

On the subject of "fanboy-ism" (a new term for the shaving terms I don't like thread) I think its a pejorative term and is generally intended to give offence when applied towards others. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a particular product even to the exclusion of any other product nor is there anything wrong with coming to the defence of that product when its unfairly attacked or criticized. Its an ad hominem attack. If people disagree, they should do so on the substantive merits of the product not the character of the individual and they should keep the discourse civil and respectful. The great thing about DFS is that the members generally do a good job at keeping discussions civil and respectful, and occasionally even educational!

Hi Marko,

Well a couple of examples. Two threads closed and deleted on another forum because people daring to say that they don't care for an artisan product were personally excoriated for their opinions, which weren't anything you don't see about non-artisan products. Another example is me posting that I believed that a certain artisan product was a solid B+ product. I was quickly informed that I was wrong and said product was a world class product.

'Fanboy' can certainly be used as a pejorative, but if people enjoy that aspect of really anything, that's OK, it isn't for me to judge. I would suggest that maybe one one definition would be someone who vociferously supports a product beyond the product's technical merit and dislikes valid criticism or negative opinions of the product. Reasons might be that they like the maker, they like where the product is made, and so on. Both valid reasons to like or dislike something but it doesn't make the product better or worse.

Cheers, Steve

Hi Steve,

Both Marko and you have made valid points and this makes for an interesting and lively discussion.  Sadly, we have had to close several threads here at DFS when the talk has turned particularly nasty but not for the reasons you cite above.  I agree that if one truly loves or dislikes a product then we should know why because that is what will help others.  Thus, stating that a soap always forms a protective lather or even the packaging is beautiful are legitimate reasons to give because that is how an individual feels.  It is just as legitimate for someone to say the lather's scent is more important than protective qualities or that packaging is meaningless, as long as the person is speaking for himself.  There is no reason for someone being attacked for thoughts like that.  By all means, disagree and state why and the thread is going to stay open here.  When disagreements turn to attacks, that's when we have a problem here at DFS.

Most never spell mine right.  (It's Freddy, not Freddie.  Freddie is a different member.)  However, as long as my point is understood, I'll live with the misspelling. Winking

There is only one Black Tie Razor Company so no worries there. Smile

Well said Freddy , you can pretty much say/be whatever you like here as long as you're respectful. When I started looking around at forums a few years ago I must say I was appalled at what I saw going on, it was like grade 8 all over again. Having found DFS, I had no need or desire to ever look at those others again and lets be serious, there is only so much time in the day to do this stuff even for us retired guys.

Steve, there is nothing to apologize for.  I am actually agreeing with both Marko and you so maybe I didn't express myself clearly.  The discussion that Marko, you, and others engaged in is exactly what should take place, in my opinion.  I get upset when people get nasty or troll, something I have not seen here.  Let the conversations continue.
