It does matter. There are a sad few reviewers who receive free loot whom I would still accept their opinion at face value. To me, it seems that most are going to give the positive review for fear of losing future loot.

One would think that vendors and artisans would want honest feedback in order to make imrovements to be in it for the long run. Unfortunately, it seems like there are some who would prefer to make a quick buck. Honesty and integrity should prevail, but we don't live in a perfect world.

In the end, it's all about what is important to you.

What good is free gear if it is garbage?

I dislike the "I don't do negative reviews" excuse.  Well how am I supposed to know that you used it, didn't like it and therefore your not reviewing it or you just haven't tried it yet. Actually this came up with something unrelated to wet shaving but it still bugs me.  I admit to watching some YouTube videos and they have brought my attention to some items that I had not heard of yet but very few have pushed me to make a purchase. Not to mention I think it should be mandatory for the YouTube reviewers to not shave for at least a week so we can get some idea of what you have for facial hair. There's a few out there that seem to have about 3 hairs per square inch. Kind of hard taking recommendations from a person with beard growth that is far different from your own.

Here's a question for those that think reviewers should buy all the products. How does a young start up like us get our product in front of the most people possible if we wait for reviewers to get around to buying our stuff?
Is it unethical for attendees to post a review of our product(s) they got for FREE at a meetup?

I don't think there is anything wrong with handing out free stuff, but Chris Bailey was threatened by Van Yulay with legal action after giving a not so glowing review claiming he, "Was hurting their business." I wish he still had the links up to that whole fiasco.

I think a pass around would be a better bang for your buck. It encourages a sustained conversation about your product.

Man, I just read this whole thread. I had no idea about the whole VanYulay /CDB thing. What a world we live in.
