I'm shocked that my views on the words "indeed" and "quite" caused so much butthurt.

KAV -- Great passage. Although some here might argue that it needs more embellishment. According to the Flesch-Kincaid grammar application, you're only writing at a 7th to 8th grade level.

Not at all.  It is very interesting to see how we all perceive and use language.

So is not understanding the difference between a contraction (it's) and a possessive pronoun (its).

I grew up as one of five children, two older brothers and two younger sisters, to an english father and french mother. I have strong memories of being sharply corrected by my father at the dinner table for some error in speech or other in the course of informal dinner time conversation. It was never done gently and you can imagine the effect this had on dinner time conversation when dad was around. Yup, stifled it entirely. To this day one of my brothers, the one most like his father, will correct my speech and usually add some comment such as "You know, the English language is a tool and so are you." My learning from this is that one shouldn't use what they perceive to be a superior knowledge as a bludgeon to establish their superiority. Its unseemly and, in my opinion, achieves the opposite effect. We all make mistakes and few of us takes the time to go through multiple drafts and edits to ensure we get our posts absolutely perfect so I'm prepared to cut people some slack and take the posts in the spirit they're intended. We should also remember that there are numerous DFS members for whom English is not their first language and I think it would do us all a disservice if such members became reluctant to post out of concern that their command of the language was insufficient.

I do have a pet peeve and that would be the use of text abbreviations in speech. When someone actually says lol in speech I wonder why they aren't actually laughing out loud. Strange. And...if you're laughing but not out loud, is it really laughing?

If criticizing internet English with "it's smilies amd LOLs" is fair game

then showing the difference between contraction and possessive pronoun is perfectly okay, IMO.

Good one!!

Seriously?

You screwed up on correcting me, so now you're going to correct someone else for an inappropriate apostrophe?

You know what bugs me? When people come into an informal forum and find it necessary to point out trivial flaws in the way people type. Tiny, minuscule grammatical errors that MUST be pointed out...for what purpose? To feel superior to the person that made a simple mistake, or simply to be an obnoxious jerk? Or is there some other reason that completely escapes all rationale and reason?

Seriously, let it go, dude. Nobody cares how proficient you are at elementary grammar...

Moderators, if this is inappropriate because I pointed out that such behavior is that of an obnoxious jerk, please accept my apologies, and delete my post as necessary. I realize it is very, VERY close to the line, and may have crossed it, but some things just need to be said...

And yes...I realize I started a few sentences with prepositions. That's not allowed in 6th grade English Language Arts, but is perfectly acceptable in both internet forums of modern times, and the vein of artistic license, so please do not point out the intentional and mundane "error"...

I would feign great angst over my rough assault on literature with such a capital offense as typing quickly it's instead of its. Alas, I must join Earnest Hemingway who gave gainfull employment to a Scribners employee proofing his manuscripts for not dissimilar mistakes. The field, sir, is yours. I withdraw to a bottle and will get drunk. And, as an oft attributed story first found in the diary of Augustus John Cuthbert Hare 16 July 1882 involving an M.P. I shall sober up and continue writing, while you furiously pursue my errors like the bicycling woman in the Wizard Of Oz chasing little dogs.

I don't know, I took it as tongue in cheek and kind of funny, considering the flowery prose it was in response to. People get SO worked up.
