Shaving Scuttles and Mugs

Here's an unusual scuttle.  This one was apparently produced as an advertising product.  Based upon the origin being Quelph, C. W. (Canada West) it is likely that this scuttle was produced in the 1870's or 1880's.  A fact that I found interesting is that the city of the Quelph was designed by a man named John Galt.  So now we know the answer to "Who is John Galt?"

Interesting, though I believe it says Guelph, not Quelph, which is a city in Ontario about 40-45 miles from Toronto.  

I do love that scuttle with the advertising on the side.

Good eye Freddy , sometimes that olde tyme script can be hard to read - I was just looking at Karl's post and thinking Quelph? Where the heck is that?? Upon closer inspection of the script its apparent that its likely Guelph. My son is currently at school studying engineering in Ontario and also playing CIS basketball in the OUA - that would be Canadian Inter-University Sports, Ontario University Athletics (div. of CIS) Its the Canadian equivalent of NCAA sports. He's played against the University of Guelph Gryphons a few times.

I'm not sure that the "C.W." stands for Canada West either as Guelph and Ontario is not considered Western Canada although its certainly located west of Quebec and the Maritime provinces and at the time there wasn't all that much further west so who knows? Maybe that is what it means.

The CW likely means County of Wellington. Just doing some Wiki research.

Sorry, the Q was just a brain issue. I knew it was a G, but apparently my fingers did not.. The issue of the C. W. is more interesting. That's one of the reasons that I like these antique shaving artifacts. It's fun trying to figure out their history.

I really enjoy looking at this slice of history.

CAC is correct.

Canada West referred to it being west of Quebec. It later became Upper Canada and then Province of Ontario.
Quebec became Lower Canada and then Province of Quebec.
Upper and Lower refer to their positions on the Saint Lawrence River. Upstream and Downstream.

Both provinces' present names arrived when Canada was born 1 July 1867.
Next Saturday, 1 July 2017, will be Canada's 150th birthday.

Shaving Bowls:
These are Japanese Miso Soup bowls. They are the perfect size and shape and the base is perfectly located for hand holding. But they are laquer so I do not know if they would hold up when heated. They were my second and third bowls after my chicken soup disaster. They cost $4.95 each. They are now nut bowls.

I have frequently heard that heat retention with metal would be better.
I must question that.
Metal transfers heat much better than ceramics or plastics.
I think heat loss would be much more rapid with metal.
As well, a hot metal pot is not something to be sought.
This from an experienced lousy cook.

I too use a coffee mug warmer under my scuttles on the relatively rare days in the winter when my bathroom temperature seems to cool the lather too quickly. In reality, the room does not get very cool, and I actually don't need to use the warmer at all, but I like my various rituals...
