I agree with you on the matte one (left one in pic), it is my preference due to such a unique look. We'll see. I seem to have this thing (hangup?!) that polished goes with polished and matte goes with matte, and never the two shall mix! Pretty limiting and stupid, but it bugs me when I think about it, ha ha!

I am absolutely with you ... you can't mix finishes. You spend good money on nice things, nothing wrong with wanting them to look good!

I don't recall ever mixing matte and polished my self.  I agree that it's limiting, but I don't think it's stupid.  If someday we see it done beautifully, that's great.  Meanwhile I agree with Paul mrdoug:  You spend good money on nice things, and there's nothing wrong with wanting them to look nice.

In today's mail, two handles from Yaqi, which I hope will one of which will become The One for the Romulus head. I can use the original handle, but I worry about it slipping out of my grasp. And while alum can help, I am just not enamored with the original look of the handle. 


On the left, an unnamed handle (well, it has a model number) in a matte finish, and on the right, the polished Milano handle.


The original is in the middle.


Other choices are the Razorock SS Halo (right) and the RR Thin bar handle (middle).

Yes, I have spent more on handles than the Romulus originally cost!! But that's how we roll, right?!

Great choices both but I was the opposite of Paul. At 1st I liked the Milano and after more looking I prefer the "Unnamed" Handle. Either is nice though !

Nice assortment of handles. Its nice to have an assortment. 
Sometime my choice from looks alone turns out is not my 1st choice in usage.

I had decided that the Independent might feel better set lower, checked my notes, and found that I had used a plastic washer, so I pulled the knot and cleaned out the socket with my new dental tool kit. In the end, the Independent went to the Quasar handle and the Muhle STF went to the Supernova handle (which was where the Independent had been) due to the socket working better for the smaller knot base of the STF. After yesterday's use of the SynBad, I am going to do the same to it, remove the spacers and see if I like it better. Funny how my tastes have changed over the years, from wanting really loose and splayable to more dense yet still soft, and some splay.

And I had time to sort of invite Dave into my living room!

For the last few days I have been listening to the early albums by The Alan Parsons Project. I keep coming back to one album in particular, Tales of Mystery and Imagination, with all the songs based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe.


I was introduced to The Alan Parsons Project in 1979 by a new English teacher to our district. She had us do free writing for part of the period on Fridays, with the only caveat being we use music as a prompt. She had some sort of record player and the first album was Side 1 of the above. In following weeks, she would allow each of us to either bring an album or recommend one that she would try to have for Friday. 

This morning, since I decided to use my '79 black-handled Superspeed, I listened to the song I keep coming back to, The Raven. I have it below, if anyone wants to hear it.

I pulled the knot yesterday, as I thought it was too floppy/splay able, and my notes said I had used a washer in the socket to give it more loft. Turned out to be 2 washers! I cleaned out the socket and reset the knot with no washers and couldn't be more pleased! Now it is soft, splayable, and a touch more firm, making it perfect for me!

I have several outstanding knots now, this SynBad, the Wald A1, and the Muhle STF. I won't pick which is best, because like my razors, it just depends!

I do have a tip for folks looking to remove knots or reset them. A friend told me about dental picks and like most everything else, you can buy the on Amazon. For $10 bucks, I got 10 plaque removing tools that work awesomely for removing silicone out of a handle socket, in least half the time it used to take me to scrape with a knife!

I Robot is my favourite Allan Parsons Project album. I was just going away to university at the time and it resonated. Along with Dire Straits first album. Good times

Had a very nice shave with the aluminum Overlander this morning, and used Stirling Sheep. I had a small piece of MWS sensitive skin soap left, which was getting difficult to lather with, so I moved it to an empty tub to be the start of my Remnants collection.
