By any chance is the handle thinner than you were expecting.  Perhaps about 9.5mm +/- a bit?  If so, it might be from an Otto Roth Long Comb.  If not, you still have a very nice piece  of your friend's grandpa's history.  And in any case, Kudos to brother Dave in KY.

Hi Mike!

No, the handle is the same "thicker" size as the common bar handle, but has that smooth section at the top, underneath the baseplate.
Edit: I tried to find a picture of the NEW Paul gave me, but I am at work and can't access all my photos! And this handle, in the photo, has some weight to it, too.
Here you go Eric...

A quick search yielded this picture of it you posted after it got replated. [Image: a300d6aa46f164f6c8da78b6a8a6625f.jpg]

... And a closeup of what you posted this morning (with some added lighting). Smile[Image: 0f2c4f97608ae9464e502b3d79bd5eda.jpg]

No worries Eric, and I see Paul's picture now too.  I have to admit that I do not know enough to reliably identify a New Long Comb.  The razor on the left was sold to me as a Gillette New Long Comb, and the one on the right as an Otto Roth New Long Comb.  This is not the best photo, but they are indeed engraved with "Gillette" and "Otto Roth" respectively.  Otther than the markings, I cannot tell the heads apart.  OTOH the heads are the same size and have the same geometry to my amateur, naked eye.  That aside, I hope you can see that the handle on the Gillette is significantly bigger in diameter than the Otto Roth handle (12.0mm vs 9.6mm).

This was posted on Facebook yesterday.

My Great Grandfather John Macleod’s Gillette razor from the 1930s. Thank you Eric Johnson for restoring it!

All that I did was a good soak in soapy water, some scrubbing, and some Flitz polish. And many thanks to Dave in KY for supply a top cap! Mike (the great grandson) didn't want to keep it as it looked pretty rough. But once cleaned and polished, I believe he saw it as an heirloom and a peek back at how great Granddad may have seen it!

thank you for the kind words, Mike. I really think that I have been influenced by many guys here, like yourself, who are willing to do similar things to have helped me in the past, so that now it just seems normal to do these little things for others. We have a great group here and I have been on the receiving end many times!
