Today was supposed to be the 1912, but a missing nib or tooth was missing, and it is needed to hold the blade in place. So I decided to do a Contour razor. I like how it feels to my face, and it is proficient at removing stubble!

The SOC boar did well on 2 passes. I like it, Mikey likke it, even if he does eat anything! Here is my first world problem: I love the synthetic knots, but the boar bristles retain warmth! O. M. G. I had forgotten about that aspect. I likey! Using a SynBad for the last pass startled me, as cool lather was applied. Time for the scuttle? Only time will tell.

Do you mean this thingy that hold the blade? I've read that this can be fixed with solder. Never tried it myself so I have no idea how true or untrue it is. I'd ask the resident expert, Dave in KY .

Sounds like a great shave. Regarding the brush, maybe it's time to keep a variety... Badger, Boar, and Synth? That way, in the winter you can cuddle up with a nice cozy Boar. Wait. That doesn't sound fun. I guess the scuttle is an option, too. Lol.

I had one  and still do missing the blade stop. My buying learning experience. I've been told they can be fixed when soldered to hold a blade but as cheap as they are I preferred one that didn't look like it was a diy project so I never fooled with the solder as of yet myself. I'd say to solder a clump there and then file to same consistency as the  other side is all it takes. Below for $9 shipped

Same thought here, as inexpensive as it is, I planned to look again! Folks report that it gives a shave more mild than the MMOC, which does well with me as long as I remember that it is not an injector! Thanks for the link, looking at it now.

I found one for $3 more that looked shiny. Techichi has some super shiny ones for well under $20.

A little late myself, sometimes I think it is my new MO (I hope not!), but I wanted to echo Dave's comment in his thread, it's great to hear from you! I like the idea of the place you mention, sounds like a nice time, even if I don't smoke (always enjoyed the smell of pipe tobacco, and some cigars. I remember seeing guys smoking both at the parades when I was a kid). I have a cousin, who back in the 80s taught on a reservation in New Mexico. Somewhere out there he found a barber shop that did the whole straight razor, hot towel, lay back in the chair thing, and swore by it. Steve to this day says those were some of the best things to have experienced in life, no gum-chewing, barely out of high school, kid who is really more interested in the conversation one chair over or distracted by her phone chiming away with "likes"!!! (I just renewed my grumpy old man card, lol)

Many thanks Eric.  I enjoy the crew too - very much - and even when I'm spread thin, I try to stay at least tuned in enough to keep up.  This is one of the few anchors in my life, definitely the most man-friendly one, and I am grateful to be a part of it.

I read these barbershop/cigar lounge descriptions with a touch of sadness. My barber passed away unexpectedly last November and the #2 guy he’d been grooming to eventually take over has left the country and might not come back. My barbers widow has sold the business to strangers and there seems to be a different guy there every time I look in. I’m completely lost. I’ve only had two barbers my whole life since my first pro haircut at 5 and I’m 61 now. I’m considering cutting my own hair or shaving my head. I miss the “uncensored “ conversation. I’ll probably look around and see if I can find a barbershop with the right atmosphere. Life is a journey.

Maybe you should get a scuttle.  In the cooler weather, I love mine.  PAA has a scuttle that is reasonably priced and well liked.  I think this is the one.

I have a ceramic one that I fear I will drop! It is the PAA one. I have been eyeballing the travel one, and the brush warmer, as I mostly face lather.

I hear ya Eric. I won't use glass or ceramic, because I just know I'll eventually drop them. I'm not naturally a klutz, I just have that sort of luck.

Finally some time to get some thoughts into the Journal. Very busy week, what with appointments and work, but now it's my weekend off, so I can waste spend some time here! The post office has been busy delivering packages as I have been busy hitting the button 


The GEM 1912 that I found on the 'bay got here already, as it shipped from way up north in The County, as our northernmost county is called! So a sort of local seller, and a short trip from there to here. This one has both blade stops and is in pretty decent shape, but will need some cleaning. I have to check the head/handle threads, as it doesn't want to go all the way to the base plate, but leaves a little gap. I don't think that is normal but haven't checked it against the other 1912.

The Lakewood Soap Company unscented has been a great performer this week. Thanks Ken Fluffy and Dave in KY for the recommendation! I need to get an email out to Linda letting her know this as well. Next week's soap will be Black Tie #13, an unscented soap that Paul mrdoug generously gifted me. And a Henson made its way to me, so it needs a tryout as does the GEM Flying Wing and 1912. Surely my cup runneth over (and don't call me Shirley!). 

Things are ramping up even more at the work place, as the CDC has formalized how to do boosters and mix and match for the vaccines. We have been averaing over 20 injections a day, influenza and COVID-19. At 15 minutes per injection (paperwork and recording keeping), this can be more than 5 solid hours. That means our normal work of filling and dispensing medications is falling behind. Which makes many people grumpy. I try to be pleasant, but after a the 3rd or 4th person saying something like "your work woes aren't my problem" I want to say, Well obviously they are! Unfortunately, snarky come backs rarely end well for us, no matter how good it feels at the time!
