And speaking of knots, Andrew at AP Shave Co posted on FB that he's added some synthetic boar knots that are much improved over the old S Omega knots. So I ordered a couple. Oh oh, do I have handles?! I hope so!

This week is a GEM of a week. I have willingly fallen into the rabbit warren of GEM razors, starting with Dave lending me some back in April, along with his Sabre. I know have 5 vintage GEMs in-house and 2 more en route. My goal was to try them out, but if one really worked great, then stick with it for the week to improve technique. Yesterday I had a pretty good shave with the MMOC, with only minor irritation by the corners of my mouth, and not feeling I got as close as I wanted under the nose. Today I tried the Clog Pruf. It seemed to have more blade feel and felt more aggressive. After the first pass, I had a couple of weepers, so I pulled the blade and put it back into the MMOC. Finished well and the Zingari Man unscented balm had me, to borrow a phrase, Right as Rain! Refreshed, as I say.

In other news, the SOC Semogue boar made its trial run during the first pass today.

This was gifted to me by a friend over on B&B, after I had commented in a post that I have not experienced the wonderful softness of boars that people write about. Ben PM'd me and offered a NIB SOC in cherry wood, telling me it is his softest boar once broken in. He asked that I take the time to break it in and see what I think. Given that attitude, he should be over here at DFS, right?!

I was happy to agree, offering filthy lucre, but Ben upped the ante and said he'd even pay shipping! I researched breaking in a boar, and decided that Utoober Kevy Shaves accelerated method was most natural and have been doing it. Basically, it is just long loading and lathering in a bowl or your palm daily, for 5-10 days, then start using it as often as possible. 

Here is the the SOC fresh out of the box:



And after eight load and lather sessions:



And it performed like a champ this morning for the first pass! Subsequent passes were handled by the Supernova.

The boar felt good, not very pokey at all. In fact, I found it less scrubby and pokey than the G5A I have! The boar splayed well. I am looking forward to how it develops. I will be trying to use it for the first pass for a while before letting it solo.

Nice Eric. That looks like it is well along it's way. Hope it continues to give you better shaves (I believe that's what they say about Boars... Better with each subsequent use?).

Great to see you rocking a Boar Eric! They do take a lotta shaves to "break in", but are so worth it once they get there. They also whip up a mean lather. Soap killers!

I started wetshaving in 2013 with a cheap no-name boar that I strangely bonded with. My toddler or dog stole it and I never saw it again... I was sad Then I snagged a cheap $10 Omega Boar and used that exclusively for a couple years before falling deep down the 2-band badger hole. Now I'm starting to get back into Boars again... even went as far as ordering some loose boar knots from "the source" to drop into my handles.

The SOC boar did well on 2 passes. I like it, Mikey likke it, even if he does eat anything! Here is my first world problem: I love the synthetic knots, but the boar bristles retain warmth! O. M. G. I had forgotten about that aspect. I likey! Using a SynBad for the last pass startled me, as cool lather was applied. Time for the scuttle? Only time will tell.

Do you mean this thingy that hold the blade? I've read that this can be fixed with solder. Never tried it myself so I have no idea how true or untrue it is. I'd ask the resident expert, Dave in KY .

Sounds like a great shave. Regarding the brush, maybe it's time to keep a variety... Badger, Boar, and Synth? That way, in the winter you can cuddle up with a nice cozy Boar. Wait. That doesn't sound fun. I guess the scuttle is an option, too. Lol.

I had one  and still do missing the blade stop. My buying learning experience. I've been told they can be fixed when soldered to hold a blade but as cheap as they are I preferred one that didn't look like it was a diy project so I never fooled with the solder as of yet myself. I'd say to solder a clump there and then file to same consistency as the  other side is all it takes. Below for $9 shipped

Yup, that's the thing. The head may hold the blade in place, but my yellow Fluffy Industries Safety Shirt reminds me to be cautious!
