Some good stuff, and not so good stuff.

First, the good.  The 2 Band Extra Dense synthetic (2BED) has a new home!




And now the bad news. The DSotM handle did not survive the operation. That silicone must have bonded with the resin. In removing the knot, I irreparably damaged the handle. 

OK, this is weird. I dug the handle out of the trash. When I put it in there, one edg of the socket was bent out of shape and cracked, with a jagged edge.

This is what I found just now:

It looks like nothing is wrong.



My finger is where the crack is. I can feel it, but can hardly see it. And, obviously it's not bowed out there, but returned to normal.

Epoxy it a little on the inside before reknoting it and you'll be good to go I would think. Of course check with the professionals before proceeding though !

Whoa, Eric... that's really too bad!

May I asked how you removed the siliconed knot? Did you pull with only your hands or did you use a tool to pry it out.

Alumilite is quite durable in my experience... like a hard rubber actually. That said, a prying tool would likely damage it.

I am embarrassed to say I used a pair of scissors that had a narrow tip, to pry the knot out. The upper edge of the socket was the fulcrum, and I was able to leverage the knot out. The edge of the socket bowed out then split during the the final pry.  The other times that I pulled a knot out, I could just tightly grasp the knot an twist it out. These came out fairly easily, yet enough resistance that I knew the knot would have held for quite some time. This knot, set with the same silicone, in the DSotM had crystalline looking, very solid silicone holding it in place. 

I appreciate the offer, but I don't have a knot that would go into the handle. And I need to slow down the outflow of money, lol, as I have added several razors, brushes, and soaps since last December. Went on a bit of binge!

What I would like to do is offer the handle to anyone who wants it. I don't have anything other than silicone, and I don't have any skills at this, so the handle would just sit in a drawer. I am glad Paul mrdoug  encouraged pictures of the damage, prompting me to take it out of the trash bin.  As the maker, Paul Stubble Daddy has "first dibs" at the handle. PM me or post here if interested. It is a nice handle, and named here in the Journals, so I am happy to pass it on to someone with the know-how to bring it fully back to life!

Why had you pulled the knot initially? Not happy with that one or just wanted the knot for another handle? Just trying to get if you were short a knot or were thinking of putting a different one in it ?

I wanted the knot for a beautiful maple handle from Paul. So the handle was going to be extra for me, and I planned to move it on if someone really wanted it. And then I broked it...(sad face)
