Shaving notes of the MaineYooper

Today was another new soap from another artisan in Texas. Today was my first use of Noble Otter, which is located in Houston. Last week I started a tub from Hub City Soaps, located in Lubbock. 

The Noble Otter soap is their unscented, Bare.  I was wowwed right away.  Very slick, creamy lather. And the unscented from Hub City, Birthday Suit, was also a great soap from the get go.  So I have added five new soaps last month to the drawer.  The others were Zingari Man, which I'd put in the same category as above, Stirling's Unscented with Beeswax, and, after a 3 or 4 year absence, Soap Commander's unscented soap, Integrity.  My top 3 for the last 4 years have been Mystic Water Sensitive Skin, Mike's Natural Soaps unscented, and Shannon Soaps Nil.  As has been noted in many other places, what a great time to be shaving traditionally, with puck and brush!

The shave was wonderful, the Schick Type G injector making the shave so easy and relaxing, and so close!  I can't believe how easy, like cheating, someone said on some thread in some forum some time ago!!  And to think that 18 months ago, I had a very nice Hydromatic injector, and just didn't spend time with it and let it go when someone posted a Want to Buy. I think it was because I used Ted Pella blades, and those seemed so rough to my tender face (I am imagining a Fluffy eyeroll! But AST Babs underdstands sensitivity!). I am betting it was Dave who mentioned the Chinese Schicks, and they were notably better, but shortly after those blades arrived was when I saw the WTB.  So injectors and I parted ways until Parker introduced their adjustable and Dave (again! Enabling me without even realizing it!!) posted his thoughts, which prompted me to PM him an offer to buy if he didn't want the thing.

All to say, I am as happy as a pig in slop with the injectors I have now.  I find myself reaching for one more often than not!

I used the cheap ass grocery store DE blades in my Fatboy from the start of my shaving life.  BIC disposables in the Army. Since discovering SRP website. Then the Cadre then here. I wish that I hadn’t waited so long to seek out better blades and ways of shaving. But can’t change the past. Just the future. No eye roll here buddy. Life’s too short for cheap blades. Dull straights. Or inferior soaps. Or cheap toilet paper.

Thanks, Ken. I agree, find what you like and go for it! I'd add to the list, life is also too short for bad coffee! A whole nuther rabbit hole there.

The cheap toilet paper made me laugh, for I think it was an early post of yours at the Cadre about cheapo TP and self procto exams!

Yes I have told that story a time or two. Coffee is a definite addition to the "Life's too short to put up with X list"

Another super shave with an injector, this morning my adjustable Schick set to 6.

Face still feeling fairly smooth. I am really being pulled into the injector rabbit hole! 

Question for you, the faithful reader: is there such a thing as a floppy, or very soft, boar brush? I tend towards soft, high loft, synthetics, but read posts about soft boars. I had a new Omega Pro 49, but I didn't use it a lot. I miss the heat retention it had when I used my scuttle. I recently gifted that brush to the donation thread.

I don't think you'd come across a floppy boar but they can get VERY soft in time. My Burma Shave from 1979 that had a time of no use but has had obviously more use eventually when I got back to using it is my softest.

Good morning!  Got up earlier than planned, and decided to break out the scuttle.  Very nice, and clean up really wasn't that much longer than otherwise. Just seems time passes slowly while waiting for the scuttle to drain!




The Type G allowed me to be so care-free, and the Type M gave that feeling as well, but as I got too care-free and started zooming around, I got nipped! Four times!!! You'd think I'd learn after the first couple, but no, I pay attention for 30 seconds, and then it feels so easy I start shaving with wild abandon! 

But I am just loving the injectors. I will use this one again tomorrow, and try, I mean really try (seriously!) to pay more attention as I enjoy my morning removal of the stubble.
This setting yesterday had my face feeling smooth for quite some time, and typically at bedtime, I have a bit of stubble. But last night, hardly any. So I will learn to respect the razor and enjoy shaving at the same time!  Not as drama-prone as a Fatip Grande or the Blackbird, and not as much attention and light touch needed as with the Vector, but I do need to keep booth eyes open!

The S-brush by omega is a synth Boar that is a lot softer feeling. It's not floppy though. It's very springy and can be used as a catapult (or trebuchet) in a pinch.

Luckily they can be had on the bay for less than $10 usually... so if you are just curious what a synth Boar is like, it won't break the bank.
