I'd love to get something like this for my own personal use. Ideally it would track my SOTD, based on the inventory that the app/db is aware of. It would be useful to keep an inventory of:
- razors
- blades
- soaps
- creams
- pre shave
- post shave
- brush

For consumables:
- how often each item has been used

Then for all, the:
- cost
- purchase date
- etc.

The tracking of an individual item, if it's been traded out, exhausted (in the case of a box/case of razors, or tub-o-soap) could be reflected in the inventory as "out of stock' or "traded", "PIF" etc. But left as an item that was once in the inventory.

Something either web based or app based would be best, or both. AirTable, a DB type app has just come to my attention, and though it's only officially accessible via iOS (iPhone/iPad) and via a browser, there is a beta Android app now, which I think would permit most of the community access to this tool.

I just think that many people these days are so mobile inclined that having the ability to track and update via a mobile device would be very handy.
Perhaps this is all PIE IN THE SKY dreaming, but I know there are ton of smart people out there, some of whom may have some spare time that could build this out pretty fast.  I have very shallow DB skills, but am joining to see how far I can get in AirTable. But if anyone has made head way in a SOTD and/or inventory app, please share!

Thanks

Freddy, just get access for Mac and you're fine.

I use Mac OS at home and on my laptop, but Windows at work.

I like both equally much. Don't have any problems switching between the two OS.
Don't quite understand the fanboys that hate one and adore the other.

Honestly, Claus, it isn't a case of being a fanboy on my part. Rather, it is that I am simply not computer savvy in the least and just want the system to work with the least amount of input or thought. With the best will in the world, Mac OS has always been much closer to that ideal than Windows, for me.

Hi Jugtree.  I'm going to respond to your post section by section, if you don't mind.  In my initial post in this thread I said: "Please understand that this is not a “Log” to track SOTD or number of shaves per blade kind of thing.  This is a “Catalog” to record all the pertinent details of a collection of razors and/or brushes."  in other words, it was never intended to be anything but a database to catalog my collection of shaving equipment.  A SOTD log would not, IMHO, be a good fit for a database program.

As I said above, this is to catalog equipment, not consumables.  It is intended to showcase my collection (or the equipment collections of other wet shavers).

The database does, indeed, have that kind of information; but for the razors and brushes only.

I addressed in an earlier reply that the database is being developed (almost ready) in Microsoft Access and for Windows only.  Please read my explanations earlier in the thread.  AirTable is for Macs rather than Windows and I am hoping any further development was be:
  • Done by someone else
  • Done in something like MySQL with a Java front end so as to be platform agnostic
Having said that, however, if I am unable to rope someone into doing a platform agnostic version, an alternative may be for you to take the basic design and re-do it for the MacOS platform.

I’m wondering what happen with that database. And do you think to share it in the forum?
I’m trying to do something like it but no idea from where to start for now.

Hi ripcho

It's been a long while since I posted the start of the thread.  Since then I have become bogged down in trying to keep my company alive in the terrible Alberta economy.  That hasn't left much time to focus on fun things such as shaving equipment databases.  It it still somewhat "rough-around-the-edges" but it works.

Nobody has ever asked me for a copy and nobody (and I posted this to several forums) has ever stepped forward to offer help in development for other platforms and with more features.

That being said, if you would like a copy please contact me at cmbcne at shaw dot ca.  It will only work in Windows and the Access runtime engine is free from Microsoft.

If you do contact me it will take me a week or two to put together all the pieces and send it.
