Shave review of Janus Adjustable razor and Shave Off vs Gillette F4 Toggle

Gentleman here is what I have in my collection since I downsized. If you have a desire to see the Janus paired against one of these let me know. I was planning on putting it up against Charcoal Goods Level 1, 2 and 3, Razorock GC .84 and Timeless .68 & .94 SS all using the Solid bar side.

Unfortunately I started my downsizing before I knew I would be comparing the Janus. I know it’s Blasphemy but I am the one oddball that prefers the shave of the WR1 over the WR2 and I have used the .95, 1.15 and the 1.25OC/ 1.35 SB.  I had the B&R adjustable and it was a great razor, I never had a chance to try a Rocnel 2.0.

I would like to see it matched against the Timeless 0.68.  Dragonsbeard has already matched it against the most efficient razors.  I would prefer it matched against a smooth razor for a daily shaver.  I appreciate all of the matchups.

Nobody has any insights about PVD/DLC coating?
Would be interested to learn why it was chosen, and
how it contributes to the overall design and subsequent shave....enhanced smoothness?
Durability? Any sort of specific resistance it offers?
Is it a very expensive process that adds to the cost?

Honestly, I don't know a lot about PVD. I also don't know much about polishing SS. But the idea that a true mirror, ala DuFour, is being done in 2 processes is kinda hard to believe. No other razor maker has demonstrated the ability...and if you CAN mirror it...I want one with NO coating. Why coat in PVD? Why add that expense. Other than color I don't see why you'd want to ruin, my uneducated opinion, a perfect mirror finish by coating it?

Eric, are there any plans for an option with NO coating.

PS... personally, I would pay more to see it nekkid.

Good questions about the PVD coating. Two main reasons - to add even more corrosion resistance to a base metal with good corrosion resistance and to get the different color options.

Initially, after polishing, I was gonna have the parts passivated. The passivation step was to remove free iron from the surface of the parts that can become inclusions for rust to start, and then form a thin inert protective oxide layer. Contamination with free iron particles usually comes from the coolant used during machining. The machine shop can be machining cast iron one day, and Janus 316 parts the next using the same the coolant & perhaps the same machining tools. Even sharing the polishing media can be a source of contamination.

So when I evaluated the cost to passivate to remove surface contaminants and to PVD coat, PVD coating wasn't that much more expensive. So I decided to go down that route - get some interesting colors and still have a thin layer (like I would have had with passivation) to add to corrosion resistance. This might sound like overkill to some but nonetheless, my reasoning for going down the PVD route.

Thanks for the reply. I totally get "for color" but, I think the concerns about surface contamination are much like the lube port. Creating a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Gillette used brass, with a terrible gold wash plating that wears off, exposing base material. Despite all the pitting, verdigris AND a closed turret (no lube port)...you can still find D1 Toggles in excellent condition.

I respect your desire to build a bomb proof design, good for you. But I'll restate, education in properly handle a Toggle solves a couple of issue for you.
