I've seen a couple cases (on other non-shaving forums) where active well-known members have simply dropped out of sight. Informed speculation in both cases involved divorce. You can't really be certain of anyone.

Friends and Family = Paypal sees this as you gifting someone money. Whatever you've worked out with the buyer privately, they could care less as it's not their problem. It's your problem. There are no fees and they don't generally profit from this so they aren't going to help you at all, because you've elected to not pay them for their services. This was your choice.

Goods and Services - you've included some part of your payment to Paypal as a fee, therefore you've paid them for a service. If you have a problem, they are responsible to help you, by investigating and seeing your problem to resolution. You've paid them for their time and effort in this case and, as a result of that payment, they will help you.

Unfortunately you've got scammers working both sides of the fence. I've heard plenty of buyers complaining that they have been scammed but sellers also get taken advantage of when buyers say they never got the package, or that it didn't contain the proper item, I got a box of rocks, they claim box was opened, etc. So whenever you're buying or selling an item, even if you protect yourself, you have to be aware of who you are dealing with. If it's a high dollar item then maybe do a little investigation work before you send payment or before you mail the item. If it doesn't seem legit then maybe it isn't.

Jeez man wow how individuals can do that really?

It’s the nature of the medium. Some of the members have actually met at shave meetups so know each other as people but mostly we’re just a made up name and an avatar so who are we really? Merchants and artisans are easier to know because they interact under their own identity usually. There’s lots of reasons why members might fall off the radar. Lose interest, get busy, and some will pass away and we never know what happened. It’s kind of strange when you get to “know” people over a period of time, sometimes years so they feel like friends and then one day they just stop coming around. This is the way.

it has happened several times on DFS and elsewhere, yet people seem to not get it...

someone recently got caught scamming someone (not on DFS, this happened on facebook) by sending a 1 of 1 straight razor to two different people. when asked how this could even be possible, their response was "I don't know how that happened"...

I know this exist and all kinds of scammers unfortunately and tricks they try to use and manipulate Sadly.

Sometime you have to follow your gut feeling be smart about it and be Cautions who you deal with.

Someone to scam or take someone’s razors etc..How could someone have guts or even conciseness to do that?? Wow 

I had been polishing razors for few DFS members and folks I know I do it proudly and try to put smile on faces as I Appreciate to be in this community. At the moment as I’m not working searching for job constantly to get back on my feet I’m happy I can do this for folks on DFS and my time between kids / family.

As old saying In Croatian if I can translate, as my Family said they more you ask for things or take away something from someone God Will take away from You.

Someone wiser than me once said something to the effect of "Trust, but verify."  It is not bad manners or against any kind of code of wet shaving or whatever to make sure to the greatest extent possible that you are protected in your online commercial dealings.  Thats the whole reason that companies like PayPal exist - they were formed to give people protection in online commerce.  Without those kinds of protection e-commerce would have never grown to what it is today.  So don't ever agree to proceed without the protection afforded by PayPal or whichever mechanism you use.  Will you always be 100% protected?. Probably not because scammers are always working on new ways to con you - and remember the term "con" comes from "confidence".  A confidence man or con man first gains your confidence before they relieve you of your money or your property so they're going to seem like good guys and who wouldn't do a good guy a favour by saving on some fees and using friends and family on PayPal right?  Don't do it.
