If you stay at setting of 3 or lower you shouldn't have issues. My experience anything above 3 is about where the razor starts to bite back if you get sloppy using it. Whatever blade you already prefer will work fine. This razor isn't blade dependent like some super mild razors like a Feather Popular which only works well with a super sharp blade like the Feather stainless steel DE blades.

One other thing to add a good rule of thumb is the more mild the razor the more blade dependent they tend to be as far as getting a close shave. Sharper blades are usually better suited for mild razors. The more aggressive the less blade dependent. If you do push it to 5 or 6 and find the shave too harsh for your liking with your preferred blade I'd suggest trying some Ladas stainless steel blades. They aren't the sharpest blades but they are exceptionally smooth and should mellow out the shave on the higher settings.

I'm a huge fan of the Ambassador.  It easily falls into my top 5 and one of the reasons why is because it can a very close and alum burn free shave on a consistent basis.  Setting 3 or 4 works out very well for me and, especially on setting 3, i feel like it can be put it into "cruise control"mode for these settings.  But I don't mind using it on Setting 5 either, you just have to be more mindful of what you are doing.  Again, it's very possible to get consistent alum burn free shaves on setting 5 but when I'm not careful, I do end up with alum burn and razor burn.  As for blades, the Gillette Silver Blues just work great for me on any of the settings

This thread needs a bump/boost. Where are all the Rex owners out there? Especially those that were in the Group Buy event a little over 2 years ago? What are your thoughts now compared to back then? Still have it or has it been moved on? I still have mine and here are my thoughts on it. Copied & paste from another forum......

The shave was so good that it felt kind of boring. I mean 3 full passes even though I was practically done in 2 and I had to use up more lather. Phenomenal shaver that gives exquisite results regardless if one has a days worth or a full weeks growth of whiskers. The Rex delivers consistently excellent shave results like a Timex Eco-Drive watch. Truly a wonderful creation with masterfully done components of precision. Yeah, I like it a lot. Is it the end all be all razor for everyone? Nope as there are quite a few that experienced inferior shaves compared to other razors (high end or not) in their possession. And we know of the issues from the earlier models with finish, fitment and blade alignment. It was a hit or miss beginning for the Rex. Still, for me it is as good an adjustable as anything else out there. Those quality issues have been addressed for the most part and the newer versions are rock solid in overall terms of quality and shave performance. Expensive? Oh yeah, no doubt about it. Is it worth it? For you, I don’t know but, for me totally. Great day and shaves to all...

I'm still here, Gus. Still have my Ambassador from the group buy as well. I still enjoy my shaves with it whenever it makes it into the rotation which hasn't been often enough lately. I've accumulated more than a few razors since the Ambassador found its way into my den. Tough to give them all the attention they deserve but I'm trying!

I bought mine this summer (thanks to Gus' passaround) and I am definitely still enjoying it. I did stumble across something interesting yesterday. I was watching Matt's video about the Janus. He talked about how aggressive it is and let slip that they did make a batch of M4 series Ambassadors that had increased aggression due to some of the feedback they had received about the first releases. He wasn't happy with it, so they went back to the original head geometry after that. There were only around 120 of them made. Anyone have one of those?

I was actually down at RE yesterday picking up a replate. I wish I had watched the video BEFORE going down there. I would have asked Matt to talk more about it. I may have to message him and see if he has any of them at the shop I could borrow for a video comparison...

I wonder if that is the one that was in the pass around here on DFS as I didn't care for it at all and I did not think that the envoy was similar to it on three. now you have me wondering if it was one of the more aggressive models that I had.
This post by Dave in KY mentions views and opinions expressed and makes it known that they are "those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of DFS or any other member, agency, organization, employer or company."  Big Grin
