Forums!, don’t you just love and hate them at the same time.
Like many I love reading about new razors, brushes, soaps etc and if there are pictures too then so much the better.
I love the reviews from the very many contributors and in the good forums ( yes, this one counts) I like the fact that others in the main are respectful of opinion, while offering their own insights into different items.
Like many I have lusted over new kit, continually read and then reread reviews on a particular ‘new to market’ razor, and inevitably I have succumbed and laid down my hard earned cash to own various items based on what others have stated. Some of these purchases have been great, others, well let’s not go there!
Having made my recent ish purchase of a Ti blackbird, and having used it for sometime now to have formed an opinion on its use, I have to say it’s not for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a well built, efficient razor and although initially I thought I could use it everyday, the reality is I can’t. I just get too much irritation from it as a daily that I don’t look forward to using it. If it’s for you then great but for me it’s a no, although I am happy to have laid to rest my burning ambition to own one based on all the great reviews and such.
This got me thinking about my earliest razors and the Feather AS d2 specifically. This was my first DE razor, bought because of reviews on Amazon lol and I thought I was the bees knees in owning it. At the time I thought it was a great razor, gave me a good shave and looked good in its stand on the counter, but as always things come and go, you hanker after something different not really knowing why, and we’ll, you get the picture.
I looked out the Feather a few weeks ago having not used it for a while (years), loaded up a new Astra blade ( I have never got on with feather blades) and away I went. The result was I had one of the most comfortable shaves I’ve had in a long time. I need to shave and be presentable for my work on a weekly basis so not having irritable skin is a huge bonus for me.
Looking over the razor it’s obvious it is well built, feels solid and has a blend into the background look about it that I like. Very functional without the bling.
Is it the most efficient razor I have, no, is it the one that gives me the closet of shaves that lasts all day…again no…but is it a great everyday razor that performs well and is comfortable to use whilst not irritating my skin…it is a resounding yes and I guess that makes it a great razor.
I have honestly been surprised by revisiting this razor and I am again enjoying the daily ritual of wet shaving that we all enjoy.
Will I buy other razors in the future, I am fairly confident I will (I really want a HandS ZO 74 Ti) but I have enjoyed reconnecting with this old friend and would urge others to have a ‘blast from the past few weeks’ every now and again.
You might just be surprised.
