Product: Topanga Fougere Hand Made / Vegan
Founder: John Brown
Location: Los Angeles

Last week I came across L.A. Shaving Soap company. John Brown the owner and founder of the company agreed to send me a few samples.  After sending messages back and forth I asked him a few questions. How did you get into soap making? I got into soap making after seeing a certain film about a guy who becomes a soap maker and starts a small business with his friends and falls in love and lives happily ever after. (You may have seen it, it stars Brad Pitt and Ed Norton.) It was obvious to me John was taking about Fight Club he seems to have a good sense of humor. I continued with the next question about how difficult it might be keep all this going being a one-man operation. It's been fairly reasonable to keep going, which is nice.

John sent me five samples of his soap. Topanga Fougere, Bespoke#1, Woody Lavender and his newest offering called “The Black Rose” Bespoke#1 was supplied twice. For me Topanga Fougere and Woody Lavender were the standouts and I based the review on Topanga Fougere.

I can’t really talk about the sample size packaging so I’ll jump right into the scent. Topanga Fougere grab my attention the first time I open it. A blend of notes that includes floral (lavender, geranium), woody (ho wood, balsam tolu), and herbal (clary sage, vetiver, patchouli, sweet myrrh). Even after sampling them all I found myself coming back and wanting to try Topanga.

Topanga is amazing when it comes to lather. The tools I used for this shave are my Captains Choice bowl, Zen Shave Brush and my Parker 65R. During the lather process I noticed that the soap was rather thirsty and needed more water than usual but the results were astounding. You really need to see the video to get a good idea of what I’m taking about. I believe the word uber could be used to describe it.  The lather went on very thick and creamy so much of it was on the brush that it was falling on to the bathroom counter while I was applying it. The Parker glided over my face with ease with plenty of slickness for the entire shave.

I had a very close shave with a great post shave feel. The scent was still with me hours later. A nice surprise to a great shave.

Nice one, Wet The Face. We, as wet shavers, are sure blessed with fine soaps, nowadays. No longer are we chained to a few choices from the large soap makers. The Internet has given the boutique producers the ability to successfully market their products to their target users. Imagine what our gteat grandfathers and beyond would think?
