Dr P, a member of some other shaving forums years ago, had a few vintage Simpson ivories among his vast collection. Some years back when Lee Sabini was still with Rooney they did an ivory brush for their yearly hospital charity promotion. I was sorely tempted but didn't go for it.
I haven’t owned (nor ever would) a modern day elephant ivory brush and concur with others that have ethical issues with sourcing the ivory no matter how pretty a material it is.
That said, I have seen a few mammoth fossil ivory brushes around from some shaving brush artisans, and own one myself. The mammoth fossil ivory poses no ethical problems, at least for me, due to the mammoths being extinct for over 10,000 years. No mammoths (obviously) were killed for their present day ivory use. As to cost, yes, even the mammoth fossil ivory is quite expensive in relative terms when compared to most alternate shaving brush handle material options.

Sound Scents
In terms of ethical considerations ... AFAIK Rooney only made one ivory brush for their (then) annual hospital charity event. All proceeds going to that UK hospital.
The laws then, and now, specified "pre-ban" ivory. IOW, ivory that was documented as having been harvested before the ban went into effect.
The brushes made by Simpson were done during the era when there were no qualms about using the material for various products.
From shaving brushes, cue balls, piano keys ... to name a few. Different era/mindset in those days. When sex was dirty and air was clean.
