2. Is anything as good as or better (not what OP was asking for)

So 1. Yes, the Wolfman .61 is what it is based off of, with some mods/improvements according to RR. Notably, the price.
The only real improvement they made which is subjective is covered blade tabs. Other then that it's a straight knock off. It shaves the same. Wolfman is higher build quality, better finish. Lupo is for sure the better value overall.

To answer your questions. I think the Tatara Masamune is somewhat similar to the lupo but much smoother. It's my favorite razor I've used so far and the colonial silversmith and gamechanger .84 are also excellent and comparable to the lupo being somewhat mid aggressive.
Interesting... But not sure I would want a smoother version of the Lupo it's already very nicely smooth but still I always know where the blade is. That's it's claim to fame...makes it very easy to use.

Actually these pics say quite a bit and its telling me the geometry is much different in the way they hold the blade. The WR1, the blade makes contact with the top cap all the way through where the Lupo has a gap in the center under the top cap. This would explain why the WR1 shaves better to almost everyone that has shaved with both. I would bet the rigidity is much better in the WR1 also...

That's understandable. The quality is definitely higher with the wolfman. They felt the same to me but I don't have the lupo anymore if I had both id do a comparison shave with different blades for a while but at the sametime I don't really want to use the wolfman and risk scratching it more since I'm trying to sell it.

Well spotted, I missed it. But since the razors look so familiar, I wonder if this also depends on the thickness of the blade; the degree to which it bends? I don't have any other blades so I can't compare. Perhaps somebody else can check this out (Lupo or WR1 owners)?

Today I've added two shims between the top cap and the blade, thinking to get more rigidity. And yes the difference was noticeable and maybe even an improvement (too early to say).

Before that I've added one shim between the base plate and the blade. Also in this manner the rigidity was improved. However I didn't notice any difference in effectiveness. Maybe more shims (for me: cut off blades) need to be added.

The experiments will continue!

Not in my experience with the Lupo.

Nice pics.

For me, better a single pic to compare.
So I merged the two you posted.

To my knowledge all DE blades are standard now at .004 thickness so I don't think another blade would make any difference by itself. It does make sense that by adding shims under the actual cutting blade would make a difference in the feel of the shave but does that actually add to the arc of the blade to mimic the WR1 more closely or is it still obvious that the dimensions are still quite different between them? If you have any pics of your shimmed razor it would be interesting to see the difference. You know what they say, A picture is worth a thousand words!!

I still stand by what I mentioned in my previous post that the Lupo isn't as much a copy of the WR1 as most would think. They may shave similar but my best guess is that someone that says the Lupo shaves exactly the same or better than the WR1 is only hoping that their $30-90 actually bought them an exact copy so it was money well spent!! Its only money well spent if its an "EXACT" copy and by the pics that have been posted they are clearly "NOT' that....

btw... I have neither of these razors, nor do I want either of these razors but it still doesn't change the fact that the differences are plain to see with the human eye!!

As requested some pics and my findings with the shim experiments.

muzichead noticed that the Lupo's blade didn't touch the top cap, in contrast to the Wolfman WR1. Therefor the rigidity of the blade should be better with the WR1. So I added two shims (one was not enough) to make the blades touch the top cap. This had no effect on the blade gap.

[Image: gC06BC5i0rF7Wa4XsHoloRsE.jpg?f=user_large]

The rigidity of the blade was indeed noticeably improved. And it took me a while to conclude that it did not provide for a better shaving experience. At first I thought it did, but I was confusing different with better, wanting it to be better. In fact, the blade feels more harsh, less forgiving. With the blade not touching the top cap, the blade feels softer to the skin. The best comparison I can make is to imagine a car with or without suspension.

In an attempt to improve the effectiveness I've also added two shims between the blade and the base plate.

[Image: SVPoF6idATEckhQGJbZhg32x.jpg?f=user_large]

This also improves rigidity, but what I was looking for is the increased blade gap. After shaving with it a couple of times I do think the effectiveness has improved, but only marginally. It's hard for me to come to a definitive conclusion about it, mainly because my shaving results are not always consistent. I've once achieved the ultimate shaving result without shims (Lupo, same blade) and I still don't know what I did differently. So there is still room for improvement in prep, or more likely technique.

Shims just help a bit.

To have something different, It needs a different geometry.
BTW, Lupo is a mid-aggressive ... not mild.

I may suggest Maggard Razors V3A (Cobbled geometry) with MR14 handle.
