The ultrasonic cleaner can be especially problematic for really old razors because of how old the plating is. If you ever use one, put it in for short cycles, don't use a harsh chemical treatment and maybe don't use the heating function.

This is just a little 19.95 jewelry cleaner from Amazon. I don't ever use any type of cleaning agent other than a little squirt of whatever hand soap my wife has on the counter.
Yeah, I don't expect a $20 razor to have a heavy plating.

Yeah, no kidding right? I really didn't mean for this to be a super hard knock on the razor as much as a warning to be gentle with them. It was a bit of a surprise tho. I am still a happy Black Hawk owner.

What's the old saying? Youse pays your money youse takes your chances?

So I learned a little bit more. Or observed a little bit more. First I should clarify that in my first post about this I said it was bubbled, and in my sarcastic post I said it was peeled. It is bubbled, and I believe it has water underneath.

I can squeeze the bubbles almost like trying to get an air bubble out while applying a decal. When I first noticed this I was a little disgusted in general so I just put the thing back in the box and into the cabinet. I never tried to actually scrape or cut any of the bubbles. What is interesting to me is that for the sake of science I tried to scrape the coating off with a razor blade, and had absolutely no luck.

I mean, I am sure I could get it off if I was really trying, but it is tougher than it looks. My only guess is that it is thin enough (or mis-applied) that it has pin holes in it that allowed the ultrasonic to push water under the coating where it is not bonded properly to the aluminum.

I hate reading this. You know, I talked to Jay at Delta Echo Razors about recoating mine, just for fun, because I thought this razor would look stunning with a Delta Echo finish, but for some reason I'm having a hard time investing another 60-80 dollars into the razor because at that point, it kills the affordability factor for me.

I think if you had it done by DE, then you would really have something. The machining is very good.

Had my first shave with the black hawk  yesterday with a Kai Capt. Mild. It took a little detour on it's way Tongue

I had a great experience for my first time using a AC blade razor,  two pass DFS . It would have been BBS , but I don't shave ATG.

Wow you know DFS is just such a different forum. It's nice to have a thread stay on topic. Additionally it's great to have something given a chance and have honest people review it whether it be good or bad without people having to worry about being banned, having to defend a vendor from forum trolls, or have your posts deleted and a nice ban simply because your opinion is different than the mob's. This is how people get information and this is how people find what they like and what they don't. People have opinions here and their ideas are respected no matter which vendor they like.

I love DFS. This is a real shaving forum.

As for the Hawk I'm still loving it's shaves. Smooth, efficient and a wonderful budget piece of gear. It's fool proof to get a BBS. I appreciate this being provided to the hobby and I hope for more budget gear because I might not have tried an SE if they all cost $240.

I very much appreciate that andrewjs18. I probably shouldn't have made such a big deal about it but the freedom here is incredible and just seeing how this particular thread and it's commentary/information has flourished made me proud of this forum.

Now back to The Hawk! We can talk about The Hawk! Can you believe it? No censoring.

Thanks DFS! Y'all have at it.
