I'm finding the quoting that often goes on here pretty excessive. The quote levels often reach 5 or more. Unless I'm cut from different cloth, structure like that does little to clarify; instead, it confuses my eyes and merely makes me drop down to the text the poster is leaving which is usually easily associated with the thread, therefore could have done without the multilevel quotes to begin with.

Some boards I frequent have curtailed multilevel posting because it became so pervasive. Isn't one or two levels enough to frame the thread for easy understanding? I suspect that members excessively multiquote because they can!

On Tapatalk, I often edit the quoted replies to only show the last one, not the entire series.

Same goes for pictures....there is no need to quote 25 pictures only to say "nice brush".

I admit to doing it both ways, though as multipule quotes begin to grow outrageously, I will edit for ease of reading.

I think the quote nesting can be adjusted. I'll check the settings later tonight.

Here is the issue; there are two buttons on the postbit. One says Quote, the other says Reply. You hit the Reply button and it takes you to the full editor with the post you replied to quoted in it. That is daft in my opinion and I took it out on my own site. The OTHER button - Quote - enables you to quote one or more posts and then make your reply.

In my opinion - most of the "quotes" are not intentional, and we should consider making quoting a deliberate act via the quote button, not the reply, and remove the quote insert when using the postbit Reply button.

leefish, even setting it up as you suggest, wouldn't the underlying problem still be there? In other words, let's say I use the quote button and quote two different posts, make my own comment, and post it and then someone quotes my post. Wouldn't those two quotes plus my statement all show up again, etc., etc.?

If I'm replying to someone who has a photo heavy or quote heavy post, I just go to reply, edit out the photos or quotes but leave the last poster's comment and then add my own. It's not that difficult to do and seems to take care of much of the problem.

yes, but I think there's also a setting in the admin cp where you can restrict how many 'nested' quotes it'll show, iirc.

example...if you quote 2 different posts and write a reply, then someone quotes your reply without removing the posts you quoted, that would mean there will be 6 quotes and 1 new reply. I think the setting will allow you to adjust how many of those quotes are seen.

Indeed Freddy - my point is that there are a LOT of people who are quoting when all they want to do is reply. Smile
