My guess is that they recognized the situation and offered the extra product as a thank you for giving them another chance. A verbal or email acknowledgement would have been nice, or even a note saying something along the lines of "Sorry about the past issues, but here's some_____ to hopefully make up for it. Thanks for giving us another shot!"
I don;t think they will want the product back...out of sight, out of mind...and by you reaching out to them with the offer, it shows YOUR integrity is above reproach, despite any negative experiences in the past...

Usually, vendors will find it more of a hassle for you to return things. I've had this happen a couple of times on Amazon. One of them, I ordered a bottle of 100 aspirin. I got a bottle of 1000. I let the vendor know, asking what they wanted to do. They misunderstood my email, thought I was complaining about getting the wrong order, and sent me another bottle of 100. I let them know again, and they said forget it, our mistake, keep your lifetime supply of Aspirin...
