So, I have a tub of soft CBL Premium soap, unscented, which I've used as is. I have since added essential oil to it (stirred into the whole of the soap). Ive historically used it 3 times, I believe. I had added more to the mix between uses, as the scent was too light for my tastes.

A week or so after the final addition, I used it for the fourth time (last night). This was 2 days after I had a reaction to a cinnamon soap. I also stated to used a brush last night that was very scritchy. After the shave, which went off fine, I had red flushed cheeks. I'm thinking this is a reaction, but I'm not 100% sure that it's the EO laden soap from last night. Could be a perfect storm combo. Nonetheless, I'm looking to see if I can reduce the chance by 'diluting' the oils in the soap.

So far, since last night I loaded the tub with water, swished it around and dumped the water out. I let it dry for a few hours then stirred up and repeated the same. Anyone have any inclination if this will do anything, or am I on the wrong path?

Thanks in advance folks.

Why are you doing chemistry with a non scented soap? If you want a soap buy something already formulated. Just from what I read the oils are probably the issue only compounded after the cinnamon tore you up. Probably need a few days of no shaving until your face calms.

I probably should have included the details that the unscented soap was a gift. I typically will not use unscented. So I figured, let's try scenting it so I'll actually use it.

All of that said, it was probably not the smartest decision, So maybe I'll just pitch the soap and the idea of chemistry at home. Lol!

Let me switch tracks, if I may... Most soaps of the oatmeal variety I've tried lean heavily towards dry, bland, scents. I happened upon this eo which is more of a sweet, desert type scent. Any suggestions of a soap that might be an oatmeal cookie, ala sweet, scent?

Holy Black soaps never worked for me but they did have a soap that was placed in a cookie tin. Guys sell it occasionally on the BST. I'm more of a citrus forward guy myself so not much help on the sweeter smelling soaps other than the HB release.

You sure did have a perfect storm my friend. First off Cinnamon is high on the allergic index so that was one thing that might have worked against you. Using a scritchy. brush certainly wouldn’t help an already sensitive skin. Also there are Essential oils and Fragrance oils that should not be put on the skin without proper dilution. So if you wanted to fragrance an Unscented soap you’d been much better off to scoop out some of the soap into a shaving bowl and add a couple of drops of the Aroma oil the bowl and build your lather. One question.. have you used the soap unscented and did you feel any sensitivities then?
The reason I ask is anyone can have reactions to any one ingredient or a combination of ingredients.

I also agree to let your skin calm down for a day or two.

Hope all is well.

Thanks for the reply Frank.

Nope, I used the soap unscented the first time without incident. Additionally, I used it with less scent oil also without incident. So the amount i now have it it, possibly coupled with the prior cinnamon irritation AND the use of a boar, likely made that perfect storm.

Ooh well, I should probably just ditch it and hunt for a tried and tested replacement (done right).

Live and learn.

As Frank noted, you might have done better if you had just added a touch of scent to the lather while you built it in the bowl. That is what I have done with aroma essences, hydrosols, and even a few colognes, and it has worked well. I would suggest continuing with the fun of experimentation, though, rather than giving up.

Do you then have any advice on reducing the level on this tub, or did I ruin it? Thanks.

I would recommend just waiting a couple days, then trying the soap again with a less irritating brush. If you still another reaction, then you could try mixing that soap half and half with another tub of unscented CBL or a different unscented soft soap.

Conversely one could add more unscented soap of the same mfr into the puck, presuming you directionally favoured the original

Easily enough accomplished: remove both soaps from their container, evenly/thoroughly mix them via grating (or mashing if croap) and refill the containers with the diluted result.
