Shaves improved, did the following :
Hot shower, good soap
Myrsol Emulsion or Proraso preshave or ABC presh cream
Bloom water on face
Face lather

Occasional preshave oil if my face is dry or after a rough shave

Experiment - you will find what works best for you

After a hot shower, I apply Grooming Dept Unscented Pre-shave. I keep my face wet while bowl lathering.

BeforeI bought GD pre-shave, I just used a bit of the soap proto lather as pre-shave while I built my lather.

Thank yal for the replies. I will have to give a preshave product a shot.

I think what throws me off is sometimes just a hot shower is sufficient and other times it seems like there is a lot more prep needed for a good shave.

I think the preshave will make it more consistent and provide a more reliable shave.

I freely admit I don't use it that much, mainly due to my age and habitual routine [ocd], but the PAA Cube creates a nice slick pre - shave foundation before laying on lather. Could practically shave with it. Worth a try and cheap.

Hydrating the whiskers is key for me; I either wash my face in the shower with a good soap, or if I'm shaving without showering, I use Noxema face wash. I've tried other face washes, and that one is best for my skin and whiskers. I typically use some sort of pre-shave - Grooming Dept is good, but I have found a few others that work well for me also. Proraso green pre-shave works well, and lately I've been using Crown Shaving Co. pre-shave, which I am really liking.

I have used pre-shave oils in the past, and they work well for the shave for me, but my skin doesn't seem to do well with them in the long run. I have very oily skin already, and adding the extra oil in such concentrated manner creates blemishes, etc, over time. I think someone with different skin than mine could probably do well with pre-shave oil, though. And you can make your own very inexpensively.

I use the Grooming Dept preshave religiously. Love it.

My routine is the same as Celestino, no pre shave or shower (as I go to the gym after I shaved no shower either). Works best for me and I always shave twice a day without any skin problems. Tried pre shave, washing face and head before and for me personally it’s better if I don’t before putting the razor to my skin.

For a long time, I believed I needed a pre-shave product. I picked a number of soaps on my shelf and tried each with and without a pre-shave product. Some worked better with the pre-shave, and some worked just fine without. The ones that worked just fine without were what I consider a higher end soap, including Ethos, CBL Orion, and Mike's Natural Soaps. I tossed my pre-shave products and now I buy better soap.

Bloom water is the best pre-shave I know of (and I have tried a few).
