Owl House

Brian, if you've got small animals you might not want raptors about, however, owls hunt exclusively at night so if you incarcerate your fowl overnight the losses should be manageable They're very efficient hunters.  We were practically overrun with rabbits over the past few years, so much so that there were fights between rival rabbit gangs.  A sight I'd never seen before featuring about a dozen rabbits beating up on one old guy.  I'm not sure if it was the alpha male finally getting unthroned or what but those suckers were mean and this went on for hours just circling and darting in for a kick or a bite and making growling noises I'd never heard come out of a rabbit before.  Since the owls have been around there are almost no rabbits around - I spotted two a couple of mornings ago but there are no more roaming gangs.  I also like that owls don't hunt the songbirds unlike hawks.  When we've had hawks about its been awfully quiet with no chirping, twittering songbirds about.

I'll need to look into it some more then. I thought that they preferred to hunt at night but would hunt at any time of the day when they're hungry. :-) I know I do but I only go so far as the kitchen.

Yes, we have all sorts of wildlife, and right in my backyard. The list is almost endless. For the most part I get along with them and we love to watch them. That's one reason that we live where we do.

Too cool Kevin! I never thought to put up an owl nest box, but with fowl running around and with past problems with hawks I don't think I will. I sure would like to though.

If you have chickens or pigeons, simply put them into the coop in the evening. Of course, if you have guinea keets, that could present a problem. I used to have pigeons, and every once in awhile one would absolutely refuse to come into the coop at night. It often wound up as an owl pellet the next morning. If you have hawks in the vicinity, I don't think an owl would present any problem that a hawk would not.

I wasn't sure if I should mention that my first thought when I saw this rabbit fight was, dang, if I had my shotgun I could fill the freezer in one shot!

Primo, I doubt the owls will give a hoot (yeah I know, terrible!) as long as it holds together long enough for them to have a clutch or 2. Looks good to me; but I'm not an owl.
