The new G5C knots by APShaveCo look interesting, I wonder if they are made by Oumo or someone else. Hair imported from Japan.

I have a batch on order for my handles and will set one aside for myself to test.

The G5C is the replacement for the 2BED. I was just emailing with Andrew this morning. I asked about the splaying, the glue bump, and how it compares. Here is his response:

Since it’s a fan knot it has a very low glue bump i.e. once set in the handle it’s negliable/unnoticeable. Certainly no large glue bump like some other knots.

It will have less splay than the 2BED yes, but I wouldn’t say springyness. Throughout the G5 lineup the backbones more natural feeling that your standard synthetic.

No issues at all. In fact, I was surprised at how much I liked it! I like super soft, like the SynBad, and love lots of splay. The density of this knot had me worried, as did its height. Setting it higher helped, and it is giving me a soft, scrubby feeling.

You can't see it, but I put a rubber gasket in it to boost it up.

So what loft did you settle on?

I don't know the exact loft. I know I reset it so that the top of the glue bump is just a bit below the top of the socket. This morning I used it, but first let it soak in hot water. Wow, really made me take notice of how much I like it!

I tested a 26mm G5C Fan today. My initial reaction was it seemed similar to the now discontinued 2BED, but with less stitch/softer tips. It also looks a tad bit more like a realistic badger, which is a nice touch!

Although I ordered 26mm, this knot looks and feels more like a 24mm knot. Of the 4 knots I ordered, all 4 were closer to 25mm than 26mm with the digital calipers.

Lots of backbone with this knot, again similar to the 2BED, so I set it higher than I normally set knots at 53mm. You can get away with this since it has a very low glue bump. I think this knot really needs to be set high, or it would just have way too much backbone and be pretty annoying when lathering.

A small amount of black/grey dye also came out in the first lather. Not that concerning to me, but worth mentioning.

This knot could be a winner, but I’ll need a few more uses with it to be sure. In my opinion, this knot has a nice mix of the 2BED and G5 attributes.

Very nice review. Thanks Paul!

I have one awaiting the brush handle. As soon as that arrives, I plan to give it a shot too.

The color 'bleed' has me worried, but hopefully it was a fluke or a first shave thing. If it's a lasting issue, I guess you could use white vinegar to set the color (like you do with Easter eggs). But then you have the stink to deal with. Hopefully it's a non issue. Definitely looking forward to your next shave.

Nice review, and I look forward to more thoughts as you go along! Good to know about the size thing. I am leaning towards this knot for the Stirling handle I de-knotted and Dave has cleaned out for me.

I had a B&W from Maggard Razors that bled on first use. Brad assured me it happens and should be a one time event. He was right. Let's hope that is the case with these.

Stubble Daddy, my bet is that Andrew at AP would tell you if he experienced anything like that!

G5 synths are pretty nice I’ve got one in a AP handle and it’s goto for me
