When any artisan develops a new formula, testers are used to provide feedback. However, to be useful, that feedback needs to be honest and unbiased. I am a tester for one of the top artisans. There are times that the feedback I have provided has been quite positive and times when my feedback has been negative. Not everyone has the same needs and preferences in a soap. Thus, multiple testers are used to provide a variety of opinions. There have been times I have provided feedback on a new soap and was told that the majority of the testers disagreed with me. I can live with that.

Often when evaluating soaps, I will do a face-off where I will lather two soaps using similar brushes and then shave each side of my face with one of the soaps. That way, I can determine the impact each soap has on each aspect of the shave.

To be honest...the only way artisans should test soap is “blind.” That is, the testers get several unmarked different soaps. They have no idea which soap is which..and especially which is the new test batch. Then they evaluate them. The playing field is totally level. There is no bias towards the new base. In this scenario, Talbot v2 may have beaten v3 among the testers.

Now that Talbot v3 has been around for awhile...any changes in your assessment of it vs. his v2?

I still prefer V2, but I like both artisans involved enough to keep buying. V3 isn’t enough of a step back to outright stop supporting
