I knew the fanatical obsession with PSF would hit the "wall". Looks like we are now there.

His stated goal was just to improve the post shave. However...in his quest to do that he really negatively impacted the whole base. Tragic...

I totally disagree with your entire assessment of the soap base except for possibly the cushion part. That’s never a metric I cared about. To say it’s harder to lather though is laughable to me and to say it’s not as slick, maybe more.

I could agree with you but then we would both be wrong.

Very Interesting. In my experience, I’ve found V3 to be vastly superior to V2 is slickness and post shave feel. I’ve only used it a few times mind you... so I think it’s time to do some more testing ?

This is a very interesting discussion. I have the latest Talbot v3 base, and like it, but have not been in this hobby long enough to try the v2 base. I am one of the people who sometimes falls into the mental trap of always believing that newer or updated offerings are better or improved. A fallacy of obsolescence, as it were. But this thread is a good reminder that this is not always the case.

Personally...I really like the scent of Island ever since the original GD release. Okuma to me was a huge miss...the scent description sounded great..but..to me smelled more like a bad laundry detergent...or soap. Others seem to like it though...

The real stars of the show are the accompanying Maol aftershaves. The scents are much much better than the soaps. And his new v2 base Is superb.
I will say except for the colab with Mo and frankenlime. I picked up 3 splashes and just one soap and the soap is the star in terms of scent.

What happens and especially on Reddit these guys give those close buddies test runs and they tell them what they want to hear. To me, shame on them. Same thing happened with Icarus. Allot of guys preferred bison over that and he jumped ship fast. Same shit was done when Declaration said no more scent notes. Few guys chiming in that it was a stellar move but most said BS.

I like Mo allot and he allowed me to test Fortis early. I told him point blank that while it was priced aggressively the base was a step back from what I came to expect from him.

This hobby pats ass way to much and you get things like this.

Also, watching dudes shave is just abnormal to me.

To be honest, Chads V2 base is still better than 99% of the bases in the business and didnt need to be improved upon. Some of the scents haven’t really been for me and I’m hoping to see more collabs. How awesome would it be to see talbot and APR team up?

There is some truth in what you say. Talbot V2 was better than the vast majority of soaps. However, other top artisans have improved the performance of their soaps over the past year. Also, some newer artisans have come on the scene with superb soaps. I suspect Chad felt the need to improve his as well. Unfortunately, according to some, he failed in his effort.

What do you mean? I have no issues with buddies getting bases to test but the difference is having a way to give constructive feedback. Most of what happens is that buddies take a knee and simply praise the product which provides just the opposite feedback the soap maker needs.

In less then a year I think we have called out two base changes that were a step back from the previous release. There are probably more if we think about it. I'd count Fortis as a 3rd just on base development and not that it was created to fit a price point.
