I would not go that far. I can get at least a useable or even good lather...just not anything that is comparable to the best bases available.

We should also be careful not to conflate our discussion of MW with the original topic of this thread because Oleo's base is IMO much better than MW's.

A) Oleo Empire soap and after shave arriving today really looking forward to it, my first Oleo soap.

B) I have found MW to be one of the best soaps out there once you get the lather thing worked out and it's a pretty simple process IMHO.

Didn’t want to take the Oleo thread in the wrong direction, either, but… Having had my share of subpar Mystic Water lathers, I wanted to interject, as they’ve been much better (with both synthetic and boar) after making sure I follow a few simple steps. What has worked for me: 1) Bloom the soap for a few minutes; not a lot of water is needed. 2) Load the soap with as dry a brush as possible; add very little water and only when absolutely needed. 3) Load more soap than would seem necessary. 4) Painting with the brush is better than splaying the brush — the less air entering the lather, the better.

The good thing about quality soap bases like Mystic and Oleo (among others) is that they have a good amount of residual slickness. Even if the lather wasn’t the greatest, there is always the slickness to help keep the razor moving smoothly. The nice post-shave is an added bonus.

Bloom the soap for a few minutes; not a lot of water is needed.

THIS! I know "blooming" is considered sacrilege in certain circles, but for whatever reason it works wonders with MW. It's the only soap I bloom anymore.

They lather up exceptionally well and have a great base. Good slickness, etc

However most of the scents are a disappointment for me. I’m sticking with my initial impression... most are a sugarbomb blast of a girly perfume that you would find at the mall in a Forever 21 store. Sorry, just being honest. My 2 favorites of the bunch are Jamel Vetiver and Don Luis... they are nice, subtile/natural scents.

I have only ever tried Jacmel and I also really enjoy it. Most of the others, I eschewed because I, too, do not like the sugar bomb / dessert soaps.

I hear you Stubble Daddy , I agree as well. I figure the makers have just picked up some pre-mixed scents from one of the outfits that sells that kind of thing. There is nothing offensive about the scents they're just..... you know. The two you mentioned I haven't tried.

I rather like the Sweet Oakmoss soap I have. It is sweet, but not cloying to my nose and definitely not girly. The only other one I've smelled was Periferia and it was "OK" I guess. Not my cup of tea though so I think I just threw my sample in with a razor I sold as a freebie. It was supposed to be an aquatic scent, but it smelled like apples to me.

I threw a used AstraSP onto the Karve CB with C Plate this morning and lathered up with JacMel. What a great shave that was. Really fantastic. Like my face is on a luxurious vacation...
