There were two skin results:  (1) four small nicks, three of which stopped with the cold water rinse, and the last of which succumbed to a dose of witch hazel, and (2) some mild but noticeable irritation, which lasted for a few hours.  OTOH, the shave results were astounding:  A two pass BBS except for two small "touch-up opportunities", which I would have dispatched if there was something serious on the line, and if I not been asleep at the "Hey, you can put this baby to bed" switch.  But the real kicker is this:  I don't get two pass BBSs.  Had I the records, I'm pretty sure I could count on one hand the number of two pass BBSs I've gotten in the last 10 years.  Go figure?

For the time being at least, I've ruled out gear related causes on two counts.  First, I've used all the gear except the blade many times, and it's possible but unlikely that I developed an allergy to a product that has always worked for me.  Second, the blade was a fresh Schick; I can't remember ever having a problem with a fresh Schick; and this Schick exhibited no bad blade symptoms - no tugging, biting, or scraping at all.

Having provisionally ruled out gear related causes leaves user error.  The first thing that occurred to me was pressure.  We have been very busy for a while now, and while I'm happy to report that it has been "good busy", it still makes me wonder if my concentration has slipped more than I realized.  Of course it could be any number of other things, but I can't think of one (except maybe sudden allergy development) that would feel so good and account the extraordinary - for me - result.

I am stumped gentlemen, and your thoughts are invited.  My curiosity is piqued too, which means that, at intervals which give my skin any necessary rest, I will be doing some personal science.  I have mentally pencilled in some possible experiments, the first of which, subject to discussion, may be using a differently branded but also familiar soap, taking a fresh Schick from a different cartridge, and cleaning and disinfecting the razor.

Thanks for listening.

Super detailed report; read it a second time...felt like I was there!

I did this very shave (MMOC w/ injector blade) on Monday and noted in my report a bit of irritation. I didn't go into much detail, as I was rearing to talk about lather eating boars. Thinking back now, the irritation triggered during the second pass. The first pass was pretty clean and I was think, heck ya! Maybe I got a bit cocky or relaxed a bit on the second pass. I think on second or subsequent passes, an even lighter touch is required due to the fact that the first pass had the benefit of longer whiskers that protected the skin (if that makes any sense). After all, the MMOC demands a certain amount of respect at all times, like a coiled rattler ready to strike! And I've got some wicked memories of rattlers while living in Montana during my late high school days!

Anyhow...those are my ramblings...and that's all I have to say about that!

Thanks Bryan.  It's good to compare notes and see where a pattern may emerge.

Sounds like you dissected things pretty well and so I have nothing to help unfortunately. Sorry it wasn't a great shave other than the 2 pass BBS results.

Williams Wednesday!
DE-less-cemBoar

Cold Water Shave w/ Hot Water Lather
Pre - Aloe Vera Glycerin Soap Face Wash, Noxzema Cream as Pre Shave
Razor - British Gem 1912
Blade: Gem SS PTFE (1st Use)
Brush - Omega 10290 Boar
Lather - Modern Williams Mug Shaving Soap, Face Lathered
Post - Generic Reformed Alum Block, T.N. Dickinson’s Witch Hazel, Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue, Nivea Sensitive Balm

You gotta love when something comes together. It's like the experience of the Festival of Featherweights paid off today in spades with the best two pass shave yet. Smooth and nearly no irritation. While it wasn't perfect, I could see perfect not too far off in the distance. And to think this occurred on a Williams Wednesday!

So, what do I think the factors were that accounted for this? First off, I think I nailed the pressure aspect. Second, I've always said that I like shaving with light razors, like the Triceratops 3D printed, and this British Gem 1912 with an aluminum handle is super light. Good pressure and a light razor came together and I just allowed the weight of the head to do most of the work. And the third factor was skin stretching. I've been working on improving this, particularly with the cheeks.

This was only the second use of this Omega 10290 boar brush. It did a good job loading the lather from the puck and I'm looking forward to it breaking in some more. I was able to face lather adequately. I'm still having issues with the hydration level with face lathering Williams. I got the lather to what I thought was a good point, even some of the lather was slinging off the brush. But, when I got to the end of the first pass the lather was drying out and sticking to the underside of the blade when rinsing. More practice required.

Most folks have said that the first usage of a GEM SS PFTE blade can be harsh and that was in the back of my mind when I started the shave. However, I did not experience any harshness and in fact I think the sharpness of the blade also was another contributing factor to the success of the shave.

Thanks Dave.  TBH endorsing my assessment is encouraging in and of itself, and I know you won't be shy if anything does cross your mind.

DE-less-cemBoar!

Cold Water Shave w/ Hot Water Lather
Pre - Aloe Vera Glycerin Soap Face Wash, Noxzema Cream as Pre Shave
Razor - SCS Kampfe Bros Lather Catcher
Blade: Gem SS PTFE (2nd Use)
Brush - Omega Pro 49 Boar
Lather - Wickham Soap Co (Classic 24), Face Lathered
Post - Generic Reformed Alum Block, Thayers Unscented Witch Hazel, Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue, Nivea Sensitive Cooling Balm

Another good day shaving, two passes with just a hint of irritation that was negated post shave.  The Wickham soap lathered up so easily using the Omega 49 boar. I had more than enough lather if I had wanted a third pass. I went back to the Thayers witch hazel today and I still prefer the Dickinson's. I think the main difference is that Thayers is alcohol free, while Dickinson's has 14% alcohol.

A couple of weeks back, my SCS Lather Catcher branded Wilbert Cutlery Co, Chicago went on a trip to a person who actually lives in Chicago. It came back to me branded Kampfe Bros, New York. It also came back with a buddy, a British Aristocrat Junior, which I will be shaving with tomorrow. Spoiler Alert...this will be a warm-up shave for the soon to be officially announced Gillette TTO Spectacular...a week of shaving with one of Gillette's most iconic razor designs! Big Grin

Yes, it seems so! That whole chain of events is really amazing!

You mention in a video that you're looking for a case for your British ER 1912. HD sees it and offers to send you a case. You shoot a video shaving with the razor and thanking HD for the case. I see your video and think to myself who is this HD Shaves guy and go watch his videos and subscribe to his channel. One or two new videos later he shoots a video with his SCS LC. I think to myself, I've got one of those and send him an email with some images. We correspond and I find out he lives in Chicago, likes that my razor is branded Chicago and is looking for a case. I offer to swap razors with him and send it to him to try. He likes and sends it back with an additional razor. Not only that, but an AJ was the first vintage razor he shaved with that started him down the rabbit hole...just like how the SCS LC was what started my down the vintage SE rabbit hole. Everybody's happy. When does life work like this!?!?

I think I understand what you just wrote...not entirely sure after reading it through thrice (see what I did there)...I used to be very confident with my reading comprehension skills but now I am not so sure.
