What can people tell me about the Occam DE set? Background, history, how it shaves etc.

For me it at least at the time I used it years ago it was too aggressive and bit easily is all I remember. Moved mine along but again that was years ago and I may find it different if I were to use one now.

I have this set. The three heads all shave a little bit differently. I really enjoy two of the heads a lot...but all of them are smooth and efficient. This set is no longer available, and I plan to keep the set in my collection, since I do like the differences and performance of each head. In summary, it is a good set...and it was a fantastic bargain when I purchased it several years ago. IMHO, they should put this set back into the marketplace.

It’s never given me a bad shave from day one. I’ve used all 3 plates at various times and I’ve always come back to the plate with the largest holes, hybrid Eclipse look alike. Build quality was and is quite good. This razor was mostly produced via MIM (metal injection molding) where it is sintered metal in powder form with a binding agent so that the metal does coalesce within the mold without liquifying in the process. I don’t know if there were any cnc processing steps during any part of the production phase or in pass through clean up. Overall though, I find it to be an excellent razor with multiple plates to help one customize their desired feel and effect during the shave. A shame it was discontinued and it wasn’t given the chance to evolve further. I also posted a link below within the forum that talks a bit more about it if you haven’t read up on it yet.

GlazedBoker or anyone who knows… can you educate me on what the difference between these 3 base plates and 2 top caps is? Thanks!

It does not describe each plate but explains the heads for you.

Thanks Dave! The video was helpful. Looks like the heads are the same except one has the line on the top cap (I think). As for the base plates, hopefully GlazedBoker can explain the difference.

From their website, it also looks like they are closed, partial, and full open comb. Maybe same head geometry other than that?

It is weird, I used the full open comp one last night and it was great. Very smooth. I typically find OC’s rough.

This was different, there was a full safety bar, so far as I could tell.

The top cap with the line down the middle just serves as a point of reference once it’s placed on the skin for proper angle as the video above describes. The base plates offer varying degrees of efficient performance while combining a mild feel. None of them are aggressive in nature and the open comb hybrid  base plate with the largest holes offers the most in cutting ability while still being quite comfortable to use. I actually found it to be one of the better DE creations in the past few years that was offered for well under $100 that came in a set with varying degrees of aggression. Is it the best razor ever made? Absolutely not but, can it be considered to be one of the best values in modern DE creation of say the past 5-10 years made of a long lasting alloy with options to accommodate one’s shaving palate? The case can be made for that and arguably be correct.

Personally, I enjoy the heck out of it as it delivers great shaves and has a uniqueness to it unlike any other. It has the look of the Eclipse razors from more than 75 years ago with some subtle tweaks to make it its own. It’s a real good set, period. Sorry for the delay in responding amigo.

Enjoy your shaves with it. I think you’ll have fun with it & experimenting with the different plate options.

Happy shaves…. Happy2
