new straight razors

I'm posting for a friend. he's looking for a new straight razor that's shave ready. he doesn't care about fancy scales or designs on the blade, just something that's of good value and good quality.

what suggestions does anyone have?

I have just sold one but I would recommend a honed vintage razor something like a KROPP. You can pick them up cheap and they are great shavers

Larry at WhippedDog.com has a selection of decent vintage razors that come decently honed. For less than $50 you can get a decent shave-ready vintage, though at that price it is "sight unseen". He also has some pictures and prices for specific razors on his sight.

I have one of his sight unseen razors. The blade came "shave-ready", and gave a decent shave, however, I did take it back to my 10k and 12k and refined the edge a little. It shaves better now, but it did provide a decent shave straight from Larry...

IMHO, the best place to be sure of getting a NEW razor that's truly shave ready is Straight Razor Designs. It's important, particularly for a first razor, to know what "shave ready" really means. You can't know that until you've actually shaved with one. Dovo, Boker, TI, or my favorite Ralf Aust are all good picks. Most recommend a 5/8 for a first straight razor, while I don't necessarily agree with that, it's what most people do and it's the cheapest way to get started Plus, I would recommend getting it in a kit, which will save him quite a few dollars. The Ralf Aust 5/8 is right at $100 the kit is about $200 I think, but you can get a really good strop, razor oil, etc. in the kit.

Strike Gold Shave at etsy.com has brand new shave-ready Gold Dollars and Zy razors. Ive never tested his edges, but Ive heard others speak well of them... $25 on average...
