New SE razor - The General

The Standard - Hone 15 handle look. Very nice. Another note according to their FB page the razors are made in their factory in China.

Another razor designed in the USA and then made in China. We need to be making things that we design right here in the good old USA. Not trying to get political just stating a fact. And yes I have worked in machine shops and I know it can happen, and it would mean more jobs for American workers. Ok I'm off my soapbox now.

Wasn't trying to get political, or start an argument, just stating facts. It is a nice looking razor, and I like the price range that it's going to be sold at.

However, how much more would it cost? And costing more, how many more people here with trash the razor because it could not compete in price with other razors of a similar nature?

Second, most modern safety razors made in America have had quality control and fulfillment issues that we have all heard plenty about lately. This suggests that American shops can't keep up with demand and are not fully inspecting the final product for defects.

So why pay more for something that has a greater likelihood for defects and/or cannot produce on demand?

In the end, as long as I can get the razor when I want it, is not going to cause me headaches with defects and returns, is priced according to quality, and shaves great.... Well... Do these things, and I don't care if it's made on the moon!

Len, if you go with a shop that's ISO 9001:2008 certified you won't have quality issues because everything get's checked before it's assembled. I have worked quality control for just such a shop at my last job before I got laid off due to things slowing down.

Len and chevyguy, I don't think any political statement was intended by either of you but the thread is being pulled off track.  Where something has been made has alwyas caused discussion, both positively and negatively, so rather than go off on that thought, let's try to keep the thread on the physical attributes of the razor itself.

I hear you, Clayton, but an ISO certified shop is certain to cost even more than an already more expensive non-certified American shop. And with that extra expense, layoffs happening, and shops closing, we just can't compete...

And darkbulb and Freddy, sorry about the diversion. But where it is made does have a relation to cost and production. Neither Clayton nor myself has anything bad to say about the razor itself. Looks great, and I'm absolutely thrilled to see another modern SE on the market!

We are still open to getting The General made in the USA. Nothing is written in stone yet.

Hi Clayton, you are so right on point.  Did you read the piece in the Craftsman magazine on the maker of Above The Tie razors? His razors are made in the US but he had to go through something like 30 machine shops before he found one that would even consider taking on his project.  So much production work has been sent overseas that machinists and machine shops have lost their ability to even do some types of work or they just don't want to have to engage their minds.  If you're a young person growing up in North America (I'm Canadian and the same thing is happening here) the prospect of going into the trades just doesn't seem like a viable career path and that is not a good thing.  A strong nation needs a strong industrial base - in Canada we seem content with selling our natural resources overseas for cheap and buying back the finished products for not cheap.  Thats not smart.  We will be hewers of wood and drawers of water for ever making a subsistence wage.  Outsourcing and globalization makes for strong corporations and weak nations.  Thats my soap box

I think the razor handle looks more like a baseball bat than a cannon, they should call it The Babe after Babe Ruth.  They could do a whole series based on Hall of Fame baseball players.
