OK so we designed a handle that was a combination of the Ambassador handle and Gillette red tip.

This is a BRASS PROTOTYPE. The production handle will of course be STAINLESS STEEL and knurled. This was made just to get a sense of size / weight / ergonomics.

The knurling will be as follows:
Neck - smooth, tapered, no knurl
Middle: Knurled horizontal / vertical
Bottom: Knurled Vertical

Hope that makes sense.

We are also working on new packaging and are excited for the Envoy release. We are hoping to have everything ready by black friday. As soon as we have handles in, I'm happy to send a passaround for all who sign up here:

We've also had requests for different guards available - right now this will be the same gap as #3 (0.025 inch) but we are also considering offering other numbers depending on interest  / demand (let me know)

We still really like that knurl patter we showed earlier, however we have plans for it on another project Smile

Thanks guys - looking forward to it. Happy to answer any questions.

Love the design of both the head and the handle. No 3 on the ambassador is a little on the mild side for my preference. The bit I don't really like Matt is the recess in the bottom plate for the handle. (similar to the blackbird) Also makes it difficult to use with other handles perhaps. Great looking razor though, looking forward to the finished product with the knurling.

As long as a nylon washer can enable use of another handle I'm cool with the recess (like the Tatara Nodachi as well). Of course I'd love it if the stock handle fit my style but I prefer shorter handles than currently the rage.

I use my Rex Ambassador set at 3 for a close and easy shave most of the time. This razor is one that I’m really interested in and looking forward to it.

I agree. I had a hard time finding an alternative handle for the Blackbird and ended up modifying an existing one to fit the recess. Functional wise I don't think there's any problem fitting a handle that doesn't screw into the recess, yet I feel more comfortable knowing that it does. So I prefer a flat bottom plate.

Keep the recess, Matt! It’s awesome.

Will it have a negative blade exposure or is the head the same blade exposure and gap as the Rex in 3?
For me, the Rex in 3 is aggressive, in the sense that it causes aggression. Post shave feels as if I’ve left the face in the sink.

Matt...
I like the recess. What handle length are you offering (3.25 in, 3.5 in, etc.)? Since you have a recess, most other handles will not work without a washer or other modification. Handle length is a personal preference, and many other vendors offer different handle lengths to satisfy most customers. Do you plan to offer different handle lengths? I personally prefer a longer handle (95 mm or 100 mm), but that has not stopped me from enjoying the Rex Ambassador.

Overall length will be exactly the same as the Ambassador. This is so that it can be used in the same travel case we have now.

But we are planning on an XL Ambassador and XL Envoy. We are also redoing all packaging that will debut with the envoy release.

In terms of the counter bore / recess  - I just tried an edwin jagger and karve handle on it - worked fine. The recess is only .3420" ID so I think most all handles will work with it. But please keep in mind - REX is not a "parts" company - we are making hardware that is all part of an experience we are creating. And I really like the look / feel of the counter bored handle - I think it gives a touch of machining quality and uniqueness.

In terms of blade exposure - I fully understand that some razors just don't work for some people. However, in almost every case, when people apply a touch more angle (i.e. ride the cap) they find that the Ambassador performs wonderfully. It's when people hold it too perpendicular to their face do they get the "overly aggressive" experience.

Hope that makes sense- thx guys!

Matt
