Squeeze in the middle, and if you are holding the blade horizontally, rock the pliers up and down. This will force the spine to quickly loosen (as it is being bent against the surface of the blade) and lose its grip.

Thanks. I think I get it. I might look for a video, as I'm a philosophy major, but you gave me the confidence I need. I appreciate it!

Glad to help. And there are some good videos about the process, too. Just make sure that the cutting edge of the blade won’t harm you. The Gem blades are quite thick, so they can take the punishment of rocking the spine loose. Once you’ve de-spined one, it will all become familiar quickly.

Thank you for clarifying the point about the edge, Matthew. The Gem blades I have de-spined in the past did not require a lot of force, either. Once you find the right way to go about de-spining the blades, it will go very quickly and easily. Just please be very careful!

I wonder if the Gems fit tightly and "click" on insertion like the Feathers with little to no chatter or flex. We wouldn't want a loose blade!

They won't click. That's when the feather's drop down over the tabs and lock in place. The GEM's don't have the same side cutouts.

The GEM's from Ted Pella come with the blade wrapped in thick paper/pasteboard. I would despine them with that protective wrapper still on as it protects you from cutting yourself. Also, I found that holding the blade and squeezing the pliars at the top left or top right end of the spine is easiest.

I also lightly (key word being lightly) palm stropped the blade before first use.

I also palm strop the blades, seems to smooth them a bit. I have used them almost exclusively in the V1 razor and get very good results. I ordered the Core model, hoping that the Gems would fit and intending to give it to my son but I may end up keeping it for a travel razor and ordering another one for him.
