Hello everyone,

Today I have decided to buy a new brush since I have learned the hard way about swirling brushes and just how much abuse they can take loading and lathering aggressively. The answer is not too much unfortunately. The center of my whipped dog is depressed and has a pretty nasty tangle in it.

So, I have narrowed it down to a few contenders.

1. Simpson Duke 3 Best

2. Shavemac D01 23mm silvertip

3. Shavemac #25 23mm silvertip

My question is what is the difference between the D01 and #25 besides shape?

Also, how does a Shavemac silvertip compare to a Simpson Best?

Any other honorable mentions for around $100-$150.

The Duke is one of the great value brushes IMHO and you can't really go wrong.

I love Shavemacs though. It's a shame that the group buy is already closed as that would have been a good intro for a great price.

To your specific question, the DO1 is going to be a dense knot with a lot of backbone. I don't mind a lot of face feel/scrub myself but keep that in mind.

The #25 will be much softer on the face so very much depends on what you are looking for...

If it were me, I would actually vote for: neither Smile

I would order direct from Bernd at Shavemac using Expert Selections and go with the Silvertip 2-band. The Silvertip 2-band is one of if not the best I have ever used.

The Shavemac knots are usually 1-2mm difference in nominal vs. effective size meaning that a 23mm knot would be set at closer to 24mm.

Being the case I would pick a handle, 23mm Silvertip 2-band, bulb set at 48mm loft.

I configured that and it netted at $120.45 after subtracting the VAT. Then add shipping, which on my last order was around $14USD you are still in your range.

I have two Shavemacs with this same 2-band config (actually, larger knot at 26mm for both) but they are great. Neither have lost a single hair. Ever! Amazing performance and absolute favorites.

Bernd is also VERY responsive if you just wanted to pick his brain re: the best config for your particular style and expectation.

Regardless, the Silvertip 2-band is really pretty special!

Valuable lesson number two, wait for advice before making a decision.

I'll echo everything kwsher just said.

That said, for $88, new, free shipping on Amazon, the D3 may be the best bargain out there in a high end brush right now.

In the $150 range, the Shavemac 2 Band is your best option. It is an amazing knot.

I own the D3 Best, Shavemac Silvertip and Two Band. The D01 three band and two bands were sold off.

Shavemac silvertip is generally speaking softer than SImpson best (or any best). The D01 has more hair in it than a typical Shavemac knot. I am a fan of Shavemac d01 silvertip which I think has excellent bang for the buck. Simpson super badger is comparable but I think generally more expensive. I've heard a lot of good things about Shavemac's new 2 band silvertip which is on my list to try.

Well, I purchased the d01. Shavemac 2 band is next on the list. I wish I had known about the expert selection deal on their website before I bought the d01, but it gives me something else to look forward to I suppose. Thanks for all the input guys.

The advice given here is great, but unless you have very sensitive skin, I really doubt you'll regret the D01 purchase. I have that knot set in a Wolf Whiskers handle; it's one of my favorite brushes. The D01 is one of the great knots available today.

The D01 is a fine knot and as SoundBrewer mentioned, you will enjoy I am sure. The "stock" model comes with a bit more loft as a rule [I believe it is set at 54mm for the 23mm?] which will give you that density with an easy to splay brush. Perfect for either bowl or face lathering.

Look forward to your thoughts Will- it's hard, IMHO, to go wrong with any Shavemac!

So did you get your new D01 brush? How do you like it?

Actually, I stopped that order and purchased a custom shavemac two band. 26x58. Just got it and have only used it once. I will post more after a couple more uses, but my first impression is: Worth every penny. It is an amazing quality piece of hardware.
